From some discussion this weekend at Johns shops, details for a plate for whomever needs....

See attached .pdf.

I can email a .dwg file or a .dxf for a CNC machine if required. I can't upload those files to 'mud.

Got to appreciate having a mechanical draftsperson in the club....

Automatic/Assisted Cold Start Device? What does it do? (for us simple minded folk)

Does this thing have something to do with the way my truck no longer idles faster when it's cold ever since my fuel pump was rebuilt?

It used to idle around 1000-1100 rpm when cold and then a couple minutes later would slow down to 500 rpm. Now, when it's cold out, I have to give it some fuel for a couple seconds and then let it warm up at 500 rpm for a bit longer.

I'm waiting on a replacement hand throttle from Japan.

I had mine rebuilt and the plate istalled now hand throttle barely works. I had it checked out twice and the shop says it works perfectly. I used to able to idle it up to 1200-1250 and now maybe 1000 but then it drops off almost immediately.

Screwy.

Yup.

I just use the hand throttle for a few mins then off I go!

My hand throttle was all jammed up and didn't turn or pull on the cable, so I know it's pooched.

So, does the blank plate replace the thing that controls cold/fast idle? Is removing that and installing the blank plate something that my fuel pump rebuilder would have done without asking me?

I found another thread online that suggests the non-blank thing often fails and screws your pump. True?

I'd be happy with a functioning hand throttle. That's the way I did it with my old five speed Surf.

Vanisljoe. Are you sure there isnt just too much slack in the cable? The hand throttle goes through the firewall to a throttle pulley thing on the right side under the hood. Theres a plastic cover with one screw that protects the pulley from dirt and crap. You might be able to adjust the cable tightness there. On mine the black knob doesn't turn anymore and for some reason can't pull the car tighter anymore. Maybe your just tightening up the slack for the first few turns.

Yeah the blank plate means the ACSD Mystery devise was removed and thus your revs don't go up shortly after idle. As for removing it I told them to when I got my pump re-sealed as I have heard of problems... Lances truck is a prime example.

The Hand throttle assembly just remains inside the cab and attaches to the pedal assembly.... I know I probably don't have to tell you to push the pedal down then pull the knob or else your hand throttle is not going to last long if you just yanking on it (Sailor insert sexual pun here, or Lance cuz he's single)

Here is a pic of the assembly from the group buy thread.

I stand corrected. Please disregard my uninformed remark. I guess I'll have to take a closer look in order to install the new one. It was pooched when I got the truck but ya. Pushin the pedal sounds like a good idea.

Yes I know about pushing down the accelerator then pulling and tightening the throttle. That doesnt seem to help though. Before the pump was R/R the throttle worked perfectly. I was told though that without the ACSD the idle will be lower when cold so that must have something to do with the hand throttle not being able to idle the engine up enough. Also, when the engine is warm the hand throttle works fine or at least far better than when the engine is cold. So it has to have something to do with the ACSD being removed.

Wierd as mine works no matter what RPM although when cold I have it sit around 1000. Take it back n say wtf? lol

Yeah, it will idle lower when cold with the ACSD removed. There is a switch somewhere on the L/H side that clicks when it warms up enough, and the RPMs will hold their own. My ACSD started to fail and we found metal shavings in the pump, when we removed the ACSD. Lucky enough not have the pin break off, so we were able to save the pump, instead of having to buy a new one.

The throttle lock can break if you do not push the pedal down to help it out. The plastic body where the cable joins into it will snap off. PO taped it up and it kind of work for a bit. It will start to jam up, and eventually the factory keyway in the dash will round out from trying to lock it. I'm working with John V. to rig up a different type of throttle lock, that is a screw type and seems way smoother, and less likely to breaK than the original 80's thottle lock. Just have to remove my old one, and splice the new one to it, and fix the big hole in the dash.

On the HJ60 (and BJ60) the hand throttle makes a great cruise control:hillbilly:

For my 80 I got a Toro lawn mower hand throttle as linked in that Group by thread. I do not have it in yet but its not as fragile as the factory one from the look of it.

I just got my OEM hand throttle delivered from japan4x4 and, looking it it, it's not what I expected. On every other hand throttle I've used the knob twists clockwise two or three full rotations to gradually increase the tightness of the cable (and therefore RPMs). I haven't installed the new one yet, but it looks like the knob doesn't turn relative to the rest of the assembly. I've been playing with it in my hands and I can't figure out how it's supposed to be able to tighten the cable at the back end.

I notice Lance calls it a "throttle lock". Is this something different from a regular hand throttle? Does this thing have just two positions (unlocked and locked), or is it supposed to have infinite tightness settings as you turn the knob? Christian, you mention "yanking on it". Are you supposed to pull it outward? Wtf?

Haha I can't remember how my dads 70 series used to work but for this one you depress the pedal and gently pull the knob out until its tight to where u want the RPM and turn clockwise to lock it.... Mine slips from time to time but maybe cuz I baby it and don't lock it properly?

It's prolly one of the things that Toyota could have made a little better, your truck might last 500000k but as u can tell you might have to go thru a few assemblies lol

Sounds like the setup i had on my BJ60... Pull out the nob to get desired RPM and twist left(?) to lock in position. Different from the ones you rotate to increase idle. Like mentioned above, can work as sketchy cruise control device.

I don't understand what the issues are with the 80 series throttle locks....you just pull it out to lock the throttle at the desired rpm, be it 800 or 2500 or whatever. a turn to the left unlocks it and allows it to return to 'home' position.

It's a basic knob and cable device, not much to fail, near impossible to break...at least in the 60 series.

All I know is mine doesn't twist. Even if I take the knob off and use pliers. John Voo said they're not designed well. I'll dissect my broken when one I get it replaced.

In my life I have had one's that work and one's that don't. I keep moving the working models from truck to truck, they are all the same over the 60 series. They connect to the go pedal. I put a nice one in the 40, it's hooked up to the throttle body. Has a bright red button in the middle, you twist it up and the throttle moves up gently, if you need to clear it, you punch the red button. I got it at 99 Truck Parts, beats the heck out of any 60 series factory ones. Looks like this:
