I think what I did was use a 1/4 ratchet and reached around by the exhaust down pipe with my right arm.
I never put that bolt back with the new cable. Kinda forgot to.

It may not be possible with the 1HDT diesel engine, in the end I may cut off then just zip tie the new one on. Working late tonight, but will give it a shot tomorrow night
Mike

Oh yeah, forgot yours was a diesel. I guess you could cut it, but just be careful because on mine there was a wire loom near that bolt. It was actually zip tied to the cable and I almost cut the wires when trying to cut the zip tie off.
Good luck and FWIW my truck shifts alot better now.

update us how u tackled the bolt on the tranny when u get to it
and thanks for sharing:cheers:
Finished the job tonight:cheers: In the end I cut the cable end off and just pulled it out the engine side, I was not able to remove the bolt that attaches the cable to the transmission housing. I ran the new cable as close to the old bracket as possible and zip tied it. Test drove tonight and the truck has never shifted so good (since I owned it), all went well, except I dumped 1L of Dextron III down the engine compartment by mistake.
For any trying to tackle this job, you do NOT have to remove Valve body or strainer as discribed in the FSM. With a little hard work you can remove and reinstall cable with a flat tip screw driver.
Thanks for all who helped and yes its still cold here, in fact I was worried that the gasket sealant (the right stuff) wouldn't seal at near freezing. But all seems good so far.
Thanks
Mike

I was wondering to myself yesterday how you made out.
Glad to hear you got it....

I did some work in the cold on Sunday. Not fun. I really need a new garage!

Bravo!
I'm glad you got it done. I'm amazed you didn't have to lower the valve body because even when I did I still had a little trouble hooking up the cable.

It was not easy, but I was able to put a flat tip in there to rotate the lever to a position where I could remove the cable. Same when reinstalling cable, but had to use one screw driver to hold lever open and one screw driver to install cable end.;) Also changed the engine oil out tonight.

hello i got a toyota gran vill mini rv i dont rilly know eny thing about the motor or tranny but im a pretty good mechanic. but i got a litill prob with trany it dosent go into third gear automaticaly and i figurd out it was the thittle cable; so now im working on that now pretty good till now :hhmm:

Thanks for the info again.
After re-searching Toyodiy, I think I found the Throttle cable part number. 35520-60060 for the HDJ81 1HDT, not much info on this number on the web. so am unsure if it differs from 35520-60111. I will have to confirm before shipping. Because shipping to Canada gererally cost me as much as the part itself, and i will need some gaskets and such before I open this up
Thanks for the info again.
Mike
Hello, Old thread I realise but did you confirm any difference between those part numbers?

Well, I just did mine over the weekend. Not too fun. I pretty much took an ATF bath. You don't have to take the valve body all the way out. I just lowered it enough on the one side where the cable attaches just above it keeping a couple loose bolts holding it up on the other side. Be careful of the gasket on top of the valve body, it's very brittle. The cable comes with a grommet and o-ring on it. I popped the old one out with a screwdriver from underneath. The new one just pops right in from the top.
There is a bolt holding the cable on top of the trans...a real biatch to get to.
How did you get to the bolt holding the cable? Long wrench? what size is the bolt?

The bolt seems to be a 12mm. I managed to get an open end wrench on it once or twice but I can't really get it to go anywhere.

Still trying to figure out how some people got it off. If your rear heater and all associated piping is deleted it might be possible to get a socket on it, but barring that I can't see how you would have enough room for anything other than open end wrench.
