hi there, i've been reading the threads on 12H-T vs 1HZ. i have a Lj78 with 2LTE. the motor is fine, some increase in temp when going up the mountains. but generally ok as daily drive. what i don't like is the fuel consumtion and lack of power. the injectors are all new. no smoke.
i was wondering can my auto tranny be mated to a 12H-t or 1HZ? the KZ will be a bolt on but its with a ECU. (not a good idea for river crossings like my 2LTE) the HD-T is a bit pricey for me at the moment. any comments

If you have a LJ78 I would be more concerned about fitting the 6 cyl into the
LJ78 engine bay.
From memory the 1HZ and tranny is 6ft from radiator fan to t/case rear output shaft.
There was a thread on this some time back. IMO its just much easier and probably cheaper to buy a larger vehicle.
If your in North America both these engines will be around $7-9K

Im pretty sure the tranny wont bolt up .12HT and 1HZ are both different to each other also.

the front clip of my LJ78 has been changed to a 77series front clip. i have a engine bay that can fit a 12HT or HZ, people here just put a 1KZ-TE engine. though it is near the HP/torque of the HZ and 12HT and a easier swap. will a 6 cylinder be a better engine?

talking about realistics option 1KZ-T seems to be the first one. The issue is, if your 2L-T come with wich tranny . ?

I'm not sure .. thought R150 .. or W56 . ?

The 6 cyl will be a better engine for sure. The differnce between the 12HT, 1HZ over the 1KZ TE will be greater than the figures show.
Youve gone this far,you may as well use the appropriate gearbox.

I would still have installed the 1KZ TE and called it a day.;)
I would like to see some pics if you have them.

once i get the right engine and tranny if needed i'll post some pics. i still need info on the 12HT. i know it came with the 60 series LC's. i'll ask the 60's guys about its fuel consumption. i already saw a 1KZ-TE with intercooler. we just havent agreed on the trade in price of my 2LTE. the KZ are said to consume 16.6-17/100kms. my 2LTE sucks at 20lit/100kms.
how was your HJ61 before you sold it?

Never got to bottom of the 180 litre tank but it was in the realms of the 1HZ .
Probably around 14-15 litres per 100klms.
Other forumites claim 11-12 litres from the 1KZ TE in the KZJ73. My brother has one and he gets about 15 litres per 100klms in a 95 series which is heavier than a 78 I think.

its been a while since i posted on the boards. i went with a 1KZ-te no intercooler. the engine that i saw came from a van with a extra water compartment on top of the cylinder cover and was a drive by wire. no throttle body cable.
the engine is definitely more powerful than the 2L-Te. i also installed a alcohol-water injection system. keeps the temps down on highway cruising (110-120KPH) and gives out more power. i still have to do the dyno on it to confirm. had the truck re-geared to 4.1 r/p to get more highway speed. 4.88 on a matic keeps my revs too high IMHO for comfort. i'm still on a lookout for a 1KD-te or a 1HD-te when the finance department approves the budget:D. might go manual if ever my matic tranny bogs.......

Both the 1KZTE and the 2LTE are electronically controlled and have an ECU.

The numbers you have provided are not reflective of driving impressions (looking at 1HZ and 12HT). There is a big difference between these engines....

For history sake: Just returned from a road trip in an A440/12HT HJ61. Mountains, sea level to just over 1100m. A little running around while up there. 862 kms, and used 99 liters of fuel. Was moderate on the throttle, staying between 2000 and 2100 rpm. Extreme VB from Wholesale, 50mm lift, and 255/85R16 on steelies. All GPS confirmed.

It can get thirsty if driven hard, and around town driving is not the best either...but better then a gasser~!

Ya'll got a lot more options then can be easily attained here...for now.

I did a very long trip recently, logging over 2500 kms. From Nordegg AB to Chilliwack BC - 860 kms one way 80.6 litres. On the way there, same filling stations, with one less person in the truck, going a little bit faster - 860 kms and 83.x litres burned. Sea level in Vancouver, and up to about 2000m in Alberta

Typical speed was about 110 to 120 there and about 105 to 110 on the way back with a few sections at 130 or so (slower on hills, faster on flats).

235 85 x 16s on steel wheels, about 55 PSI. I have 3.70 gears (K054) in my truck.

11.5/100 is not bad;) Still some advantages over a gas engine:D My FJ73 with the old 3F would have used about 150-160 litres:confused:

my trans as stated on the firewall is a A343 ? thats the model right? it says its the automatic trans used for LC 1990-1998 3speed with ECT and over drive

Pulag,
So in the end did the 1KZ-TE bolt up to the A343 transmission that you already had? My son is starting to look at 4runners/Prado/Surf and I was thinking about just such a diesel/auto set up for him?
Thanks.
