i have been off work all week and i dont get sick time so this sucks , i got a small scrape and thought nothing of it ( as usual ) a few hours later my arm had swollen up and was quite sore , my doctor put me on anti biotics , 2 days later and my infection has spread antibiotics not strong enough , into emergency and voilla now an out patient at eagle ridge have a tube in my arm and i have to go in twice a day for I.V. therapy .

i will be fine just a big waste of resources and time , so dont ignore those little cuts and scrapes people .

apparently we all have nasty little bacteria living on our skin just waiting for us to get a a cut or scrape !

be careful and get better. I had a freind that had his arm amputated because of something simular. Good thing you took care of it .

Not just on your skin but also in the water of rivers, streams and lakes. I remeber two sumers ago when it was real hot they were warning firshermen not to go into the Fraser without waiders. Apparently one guy thought it was to hot for waiders and went in with just his boots and shorts. He had a small scratch on his leg that got infected with a real nasty bacteria within 30 minutes of him leaving the water and heading back home to Mission. I believe he lost his leg and almost lost his life. I always carry some antibiotic cream and swabs to dab on any cuts.

disgusting dirty river..... too much industry and waste going in??

I worked with seaplanes on the river and I also worked in coal harbour downtown. The water around Vancouver is quiet dirty IMOP.

Infection is a growing concern with drug resistant bacteria out there. There was a good show on Marketplace I think last fall about the doctors in St. Paul's who did not wash hands between patients or the washroom!!

One of my concerns with my past surgeries was infection passed on by health care staff. I had a bottle of hand sanitizer on the night table for staff who didn't wash up before seeing me!

What is the bug that caused this infection and how did it manage to get so bad? Where did it come from?

Irresponsible use of anti-biotics. When you go to the doctor you don't ALWAYS need anti-biotics but when you get them you need to take ALL of them to kill off the infection.

Un needed anti-biotics or not taking all of it makes certain strains drug resistant and those strains become dominant. It's NOT going to get any better.

Yes, it is dumb indeed, as it affects all of us afterwards. Results of the excesses of our aseptic society for sure...

Sounds like a great idea

but NOT if you have to drive afterwards though!!! THEN you could be in for some MAJOR swabbing of the scrapes you could get!!!

A few years ago a guy came over to my house during a snowstorm with a nice egg on his head and a couple of big scrapes on his hand and he was totally drunk... Needed to call someone to pick him up... Turns out he had flipped his car in the ditch, fortunately nothing else happened and fortunately the car was so deep down the embankment amiodst the sapplings that it was not even noticeable from the road after a few minutes, as snow quickly covered up the tracks... (it stayed there for a few days, you could hardly make it out under the snow!)

Sooo... If you keep alcohol with you 'for scrapes' it can backfire if you get in an accident, someone may interpret the smell the wrong way ;)

A fresh bottle of water will cleanse a cut just fine. Just pour it all over the cut. That's what the first aid courses teach nowadays.

Alcohol, iodine and peroxide aren't used often for first aid, as it damages the cells for healing.

Also if it is a small cut(your not going to bleed to death) I would let it bleed for bit to clean the wound. Putting pressure on it right away seals in the germs.

Pouring water over a gash while letting it bleed is the cleanest method of sterilizing the wound. Anyhow that is what I was taught.....I am not a medical prfessionallllll(said with a slurr)

:D  (HIckup)

That is good advice Brownbear. A good rule of thumb is dont put anything in a cut that you wouldn't put in your eye. Dont take a little red cut for granted. I work in the OR and you wouldn't believe the things I see. MRSA, VRE are no longer in hospitals but they are in the community now, and you don't have to be a dirty pig to carry it. These bacteria colonize your eyes, mouth, nose and any other moist holes in your body, and wait for an opportunity to infect. You dont have to be paranoid, just treat cuts seriously. Wash em out and wrap em up with electrical tape... erm I mean a bandage.

Hey gerg,

have you seen the little pressure bottles for cleaning wounds in first aid? I am envisioning a small bottle of sterile water that can shoot the water with some pressure. I heard such a thing exists. That way you can clean debris out of a wound.

I guess a small hole in the top of a bottle could do the same thing. That way you can shoot the water in and around the wound before wrapping it up.

Yes washing with that style of bottle would be ideal. The eyewash bottles have a bit of salt added to them to match our normal salt content. This solution is referred to as "normal saline" it is .09% I believe. You can make your own up for next to nothing. Just remember that this stuff will eventually grow bacteria after a while so just make another batch up. Now culturing bacteria is a little out of my league so... If it is in a sealed airtight bottle after it has been boiled I would say it could last up to several months?? After opening I would toss it after a few hours. Although it would be better than water from a stream or your water bottle. Here is a link on how to make your own. http://healthfieldmedicare.suite101.com/article.cfm/normal_saline_for_wound_care

Now this may sound absolutely ridiculous, as many of my post do, but in the absence of anything better you can clean a cut quite nicely with fresh urine. I'M NOT SAYING YOU SHOULD DO THIS, but it is safe and will kill bacteria and fungus. It is also really hits the spot on a hot day.

Cheers
G
