my 4runner has a shaking going on in the front end. I thought it was out of balance tires. I literally got all 4 brand new tires yesterday and it is the same. what else could it be??

seems like it is worse on bumpy roads, and at about 60... feels exactly like a out of balance tire, but if you hit a bump it will also shake the wheel.

it is possible they messed up with balancing but I been buying tires from these boys for years and never had a problem so I just dont want to go back there and complain if that is not the problem

Hi sorry don't have an answer, just having the same issue with my 97 also. It feels like bumpsteer almost and was the same problem I had with my Dodge Ram except it would violently shake doing 70. What cured the problem on that was I replaced the steering stabilizer and replaced the badly worn tires, also there were some wornout links. I have not really looked under mine yet as I have only owned it for a few weeks, and have not had the time to investigate. I will be watching this for an answer.
 
If it were your tires- I think it would be present at all speeds, but worse at higher speeds.

If it seems to appear "out of the blue" at a particular speed- I would be more suspicious of worn suspension bushings/balljoints/tierod end etc. Something is moving in the front suspension that is not supposed to.
 
yup it is a bad tie rod end had it on the lift last night, parts will be here tom.

Inner or outer? My guess is inner. :grinpimp:
Pay particular attention to the condition of the steering rack bushings, most seem to be worn out between 100,000 and 150,000 miles, also check the swaybar bushings. :cheers:

where are the steering rack bushings???? I replaced both the inner and outer rod on the drivers side along with a ball joint since the boot was ripped.

both sway bar links have been replaced.
 
There are two large bolts that hold the steering rack and pinion to a crossmember. Those bolts go through two round bushings. The OEM bushings are rubber I believe, and do wear out. This leads to some odd steering characteristics. You can replace them with original ones from Toyota, or you can upgrade to some made of polyurethane that have a higher durometer rating. (they flex less, giving a slightly firmer feel to the steering, but they'll also transmit a bit more vibration back to the steering wheel) There is always a trade-off.
 
thanks dude!!!!!!!!! my truck is getting alignment today... but I think I am going to replace theyse also at some point in the near future
 
I would strongly reccommend the Energy Suspension polyurethane rack bushings, you can pick them up for 20-30 dollars. Upgrading to the poly bushings was one of the best modifications I've made to my '00 Taco.

Ask them to align to the most caster which is 3 degrees. The helps with wobble too. I run 4 on a modified front end. The front end is really sensitive to alignment.

threw those bushings in last night... man what a difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!! problems solved... do you think you can mess up your alighment by doing this?




on another note... starter went out in 4runner last night also... if you get the chance to try to take one of these out... pass..... OMFG... PIA

I wouldn't think so......really nothing should move.....did you disconnect anything besides the bolts for the rack?

I didn't think it was too difficult, just tight.
 
no just the bolts required to change the bushings........


tight is a nice word.... but it is beyond that......
 
shaking is still there...........

what next?
 
no some times it is there sometimes not......

drivers side both are new......... pass side is solid as can be..
