The nut holding the flange on will be staked, torqued to 80 ft-lb and corroded after all those years. And a puller will be needed to get the flange off. Not exactly 🍌 but doable with the right tools and swearing.

I did try that and I didn't notice any real movement, but then I may not be a good judge of these things.

So can the seal be replaced with the TC in place?

You can easily replace both the seal AND the bearing without dropping the transfer case. I had that seal fail on a truck while on a camping trip once, had to change it in the dirt. Get a new stake nut, and put a slight coating of RTV on the splines before putting the flange back on, it keeps oil from leaking out around the splines. I've pulled off many of those flanges, never needed a puller (I don't care what it says in the FSM).
