Hi there

I found a 94 cruiser for sale with 170K miles. Original owner. I read all the FAQ, and asked the owner to send me the vin for the digits after the "k" to see if it has lockers or not.

HOwever, owner doesn't know, and this is the vin he gave me

JT3DJ81W3R0062400

It has cloth interior. All service records.

I am confused. Can someone help. Asking 5200$

Thoughts?

Will need brakes.
 
Ask the owner to look for a turn-knob to the left of the steering wheel on the dash. With only one owner, that knob most likely means it has lockers (ie. someone didnt install the knob for aesthetic reasons)

Thank you. I sent the owner your pic, and he said it has no lockers, as it doesn't have the knob.

So where do you think it leaves me. Car has full maint history, and is 1 owner. NEVER been off road.

Owner says will need brakes. Has cloth interior, which I like.

What do you think of the asking price?

How effective is it off roading (I am new to this, I am a Lotus/mini owner), without Lockers? Not very hard core stuff, but say at Ocatillo Wells and such?

Or should I keep looking?

Would be nice if someone in Los ANgeles could help me look at the Cruiser, or run me through some stuff in person.
 
It comes down to what kind of wheeling you want to do.

From your description, it doesn't sound too hard core. I have lockers, glad to use them if I need them but I take it as a challenge to do as much as I can w/o using them.

I have been able to do a lot of stuff w/o turning that dial :D

My personal theory is to expand my skill. I think too many rely on the lockers without giving it a good go to see how far their skill can take them.

That said, if you like pushing your skill level, you WILL need the lockers more and more because you'll find yourself in deeper and deeper. And the smile on your face gets bigger and bigger!

That sounds like a pretty good price for a well-maintained rig, any negotiation room? Totally stock I guess.

I'm just south of LA, could hook up if you need some more of my opinions :D

i have a 94 and it did not have lockers and i wheeled all over octillo wells and truckhaven for the tds safari. and did great.
then i upgraded to front and rear arb's and now it is unstopable.
 
IMO.. I would say you don't need lockers if you are not doing hardcore rock crawling. I have a 94 without lockers and it gets me through some of the hardest trails in Calico and Anza Borrego. Lockers are nice to have , but not necessary for the Land Cruisers. As for the price I would say it is a fare price. I got mine for $8000 but with less mileage.
 
Thanks for the info guys. Yeah there is room for negotation given gas prices these days, no lockers, and it needs brake service.

Yeah I am a newbie to offroading. We went to Ocatillo few weeks ago with my buddies Hummer and a CJ and I am hooked.

I run my Lotus in the Challenge series, so always been a track guy, and now want to take things off road.

I was looking for a FJ60 first, but after 6 months gave up, can't find anything.

I wouldn't pay more than $4000 ($6000 minus the expense of adding lockers). Not to rub it in but I paid $6000 for a 93 with 137,000 miles with lockers and a lift. Hell, others have recently got them even cheaper so I guess I also paid too much. Don't rush it and you will find one. I finally had to compromise on color and got one in the "new white" (tan). I would hold out for lockers though.
 
Paid $5500 for my 94 w/o lockers and 194K on the odo. May have been high but it was well-maintained. Bone stock otherwise. The first thing you'll want to do even for mild wheelin' is to yank the running boards, then add sliders before you get into the more challenging stuff, then ARB-style bumpers, then a lift, only after that will you need lockers....

The LC diffs are very capable but lockers can get you out of a few situations. All LC's come with center diff lock. Are you familiar with front/rear diff locks?

Can you show me a pic of the sliders? I read about them all the time.

I want to yank the running boards and the fender extender things as well.

ARB style bumpers and lift is a must :)

Not familiar with front rear diff locks, where can I read more about it?
