I bought a 93 4runner that needs a head gasket. I am planning to pull both head and have them checked at a machine shop. I'll be doing a timing belt and water pump while everything is torn down.

What is the best brand of head gaskets?

Should the head bolts be replaced or reused if they meet the spec for length?

Any other tips or special tools needed to remove and reinstall the heads?

Thanks,

Joe

If it were me, I'd call CDan with the VIN and order up an OEM gasket set, along with all the other parts (timing belt, water pump). Don't forget to change out the front main seal.

I don't remember if these head bolts are TTY (Torque-to-yield). I believe they have a 12-pt 14mm head.

I would definitely try to get your hands on a FSM.

I did mine not too long ago. After hearing from many people to use gaskets from Toyota I went off to my local dealer. They did not have them and did not have an ETA on arrival if ordered. Then the man at the counter leaned over and said "I shouldn't tell you this but back when we were doing these under the service campaign we would run out all the time - Toyota told us to use Feel Pro's" So that is what I did. I just picked up the set from AutoZone. All has been well for 15K miles or so.

Oh and getting the timing gears off is a PITA - you'll need a special tool. And like mentioned above you will have to have a 12 point 14mm socket.
