I was at the beach yesterday. Pushed the button to put it in 4wd. Got on the road and pushed the button again to disengage and it never went off. This truck is new to me, so am I missing a step? Anybody have any tips or tricks?

Thanks!

93? Pushed a button for 4wd? As far as I know, 93's were all shifter actuated 4wd... The actual light is turned on by the front axle disconnect, so if the light is on, then the front axle ADD system is still engaged... If you have shifted out of 4wd, but the light is on, then that's not too big of a deal, it just means the front drive shaft is spinning, being driven by the tires... The ADD system is vacuum operated, so you might have a vacuum control problem... Of course the vacuum is controlled by electronic valves... Check the FAQ thread for a FSM for the 93 4Runners. Good luck!

Yes, it is a 93 and there is a button on the side of the Hi-Lo lever that says "4WD"
I pushed it and the green "4WD" light came on and I got myself out of the sand. I pushed it again and the light still has not gone off. I don't know if I am still in 4WD or not, but the light is telling me I am.

I tried all of the tricks I have read on line about driving in reverse and slamming on the brakes and all that.

I guess I just don't understand how this 4WD system works. I have always been a "Get out and lock the hubs" kind of guy. Not used to all of this new-fangled modern stuff!

Hmmmm well I guess you learn something new everyday... The truck is not from Canada or some other market right?

Automatic transmission?

If you have a vacuum pump, you can try unhooking the 2 hoses from the actuator on the front axle, and using the pump to unlock the ADD system.... As I said, I believe the newer trucks get their 4WD light signal from the front axle, not from the transfer case as in days of old... I would to a general looking over of all the vacuum lines, and electrical connections that you can manage to trace down... Obviously it worked to get into 4WD, so you only have a problem on the way out.... Hehe

UPDATE: I jacked up the front and tried to rotate a tire to see if it really was still in 4wd. Tire did not move, so I lowered it down. Later it started to rain, so I started it up to put the windows up and the 4WD light was off.

"Strange" I thought, then just for fun I pushed the 4WD button and heard in engage and the 4WD light came on. I pushed it again and the light didn't go off, so I got out and rocked the truck fwd and back to simulate what I did with it jacked. The light went off.

I guess the problem is solved!
