Just wanted to say a BIG Hi and Hello to all, this is my first post and it is about a problem I am having, what a way to start on a new Forum ………. So this is my story

I bought a 1992 Toyota Truck 4x4 ex-cab 4cyl 22re motor with 185000km, Ran fine but sometimes had a squeal between first and second I thought it was the throw out bearing so I posted it on an other forum and they said to try to start the truck off in second gear. So I did this a few times and lugged the motor, with no squeal

After I did this the motor started to make a weird noise, its almost like a loud Growl that comes and goes. I took it to a local Toyota guy and he said that it did not sound like the timing chain (what would the chain sound like) he suggested it was in a pulley, also said that it sounded like it was not getting oil to the top end …. I was OMFG …… and I didn’t use the those letters ……… I had to drive it home,

So if the oil was not getting to the top end the motor would have been knocking it brains out by now …….. it was a fair drive back to the house …… How would you check to see if the top end was getting oil ? ( I am thinking start it up with the filler cap off and if any comes spitting out oil is getting to the top end )

My next step is to take off the belts and run the motor for a SHORT time to see if the noise is in one of the pulleys.

How could I check the tension of the timing chain ?

What do you think ?

Thanks
Jon

Welcome to Mud Jon.

Honestly, your question is all over the map i.e. so many issues seem to be happening.

It is hard to know what you mean by growl. I have never heard the 22re growl like you mention and I have never heard a mechanic be able to hear if the the top end was getting oil or not. Not saying it cannot happen-just that I have never heard it before.

Squeal usually occurs with belts not bearings. Growl and whine occurs with bearings-especially when they have failed.

Did the "squeal" stop?

Thanks for the reply; I will try to explain more

The sequel seams to be coming from the clutch and was not affecting the motors running; it was not a belt sequel.

In trying to diagnose the motor I was told to start in second gear to see if the clutch made the squealing noise, It did not. But a weird Growl came into the motor after I lugged it.
I know that this is two different problems, and I am trying to resolve the motor issue first.

I went out today and started the truck and took off the oil filler cap with no oil squirting out ( should this happen ?) …….. the truck was cold and I only had it running for a second in the driveway on a slight incline. I checked the oil and there seamed to be particles in it

This is not looking good !!!!!

calm down. :flipoff2:

if there is oil in the pan, and the engine is running, the top end is getting oil.
the timing chain picks up the oil distributes it to the top end.

if the oil pump was shot, you wouldnt get oil anywhere, and you'd know, right away.

the squeel may be from the bushing in the alternator.

you can remove the belt, but not for long as it also drives the water pump.

the power steering belt can be left off for as long as you want.

the trans noise may be related to the clutch pedal height. but first, check to make sure the slave is releasing from the fork.

you wanna see if it has been tight, which is bad, and it will cause unnessicary wear.

also check u joints.

needing a timing chain job done has a specific sound, once you hear it a few times in your days, you will know.

noises are a hard thing to help a guy out with cause you cant relay that over the interwebs.
where do you live?

welcome to MUD :flipoff2:

Wristy Thanks for the fast reply !!!!! and the information

I went out today and took off the alt/water pump belt and the noise stoped. The truck has a new alt so the sound must be in the water pump.

How hard is this to replace ?

I am new to Toyota's and i was saved from the mazadaford combo .........

So there will be many questions

BTW i am in St John's Newfoundland Canada far far away out in the ocean

Thanks

Jon

Changing the water pump isn't hard at all, drain coolant, pull radiator (for room to work mostly) pull fan and fan clutch, pull water pump...

....(at least I think it's that simple...:D) I've never changed a water pump only, it's always with a timing chain so far...... Welcome to Mud Jon! :flipoff2: I hope it goes well!

Edit: And Wristy's right, aftermarket alts are junk, it's Nippondenso or nothing!!!!!!!!!!! :D

I spun both by hand and they turned freeley i guess they would act different under the load from the belt and spinning just a bit faster .........

I have never heard a water pump squeal. I have heard them wine and growl but never squeal.

How do you know it is not as simple as a belt? Where do live? Is it cold? Old belt? Does the belt sit in the pulley as opposed to a little on top of the pulley i.e. is your belt worn?

It was one of my tensioner pulley bearings growling causing me to get a little worried. Took a bit to figure out. One pulley should have a replaceable bearing, not to hard to press out. And the other came complete. I just replaced them both as they were the same age anyway. Welcome and good luck. Buy OEM parts whenever you can. They don't cost a lot more and last longer than aftermarket parts.

Guys I think I got it worked out, after messing around with it for a while I and a few others determined that it was in fact the alternator making the weird noise.
I have a Re-man one ready to go back on.

To get the old off the truck first I dropped the skid plate and then proceeded to take out the adjuster bold and the pivot bolt, not a huge problem. Getting the alternator out of the truck seamed to be harder than taking it off. First I took out a bolt that was a hold down for the three lines running across the front to see if I could make a bit of room. No luck so drained the radiator, remove the top and bottom hoses, the four bolts holding the radiator in so I could then remove it.

I wanted to change the belts while I was at it, looked for the belt tension adjuster and the head was cracked off it. To remove the tensor from the motor you have to remove the pulley from the power steering pump. I am willing to say that this has been on since day one. Looked in my book and it said that you could push down on the belt to provide tension to the belt and remover the nut. I tried his with no luck, out come the vise grips and I clamped them on to the center of the pulley hub and it worked.

I popped off the three bolts that hold on the tensionor and took it inside. I cleaned it up threaded a new bolt and put a new bearing in the pulley. I am trying to put it back together but the snow has put a stop to that. It seams like the remanufactured alternator is to wide for the bracket, ? I will have to try again ………

Thanks for all the help and suggestions I will let you know how I make out
