Just rebuilt a 22re.
I have fuel
I have spark
injectors are clicking.
I took 2 plugs out pistins are going up and down
stuck a qtip in there smell gas on it.
distributor is rotating.

Why will betsy not start?

pleas advise amazing ones.

Stabbed correctly? Its in the right firing order. new valve seats were put in the head and a valve job was done. It has a new timing chain on it. All the marks were lined up.

hmmm just which marks?

lol, you may have done what I did?

I dont know. I did not rebuild it. My neighbor did.
Its his truck. I Do volvos 4 bangers.
He said he lined them up like the book says. Chilton / Haynes.
It sound to me like it may be 180 degrees off but I dont know.
What did you do?

Pull the valve cover, make sure its TDC and make sure they did not use the cam gear mark lined up with the mark on the rocker tower, if they did its wrong.

And trying to set the timing like that, you will never get the chain with the tension like it should so it may even jump a tooth or two t.

If it is set wrong you dont have to pull the timing cover

I know there is a link on here to adjust the chain somehow. I read it in another post but there was no link. it was just by removing the valve cover any ideas on that?

Just pull the cover, jam the crank gear with something to hold it still, undo the cam bolt, make blasted sure you dont drop the chain, adjust as needed. Now the biggest thing is when you go to but the gear/and chain back on you will need to take a long screwdriver and take it and push the tensioner back in so your not fighting to get the gear back on.

whatever you do, never turn the engine counter clockwise.

When I do mine I actually dont perfectly set the notch straight up with the mark on the rocker tower, I set it just a hair counterclockwise then when its altogether just take my wrench turn then I got tension on the chain on the drivers side like you should.

Cool. You are an invaluble source. We will give it a shot thanks. I will let you know how it turns out.

Ok Re checked the timing. Everything is ok. Put the dist at 12 olclock and pushed it in so it would rotate caounter clockwise to number one on the cap.
It just turns over no fire no sputter nothing.
I check spark and fuel again. Its all good. anyother ideas?

If it is still not running with fire and fuel it is likely that it is out of timing. Top dead center means crankshft pulley is aligned with the zero mark in the timing covwe while both valves for piston numer one (front) remain closed (intake should have clearance .08, while exhaust should have .12). At this point the rotor should align with ignition wire for plug #1. Malke sure all valves have the correct clearance.
You may also want to check your compression lower readings should be an indication of incorrect timing. How about the possibility that you have the injectors misconnected. Keep in mind that leaking injectors will also prevent the truck from running.

You could put starting fluid through the plug holes and see if the truck tries to start, if it does not then it validates the out of timing problem.

Vales Valves Vlaves.
So the head was cleaned and shaved a tad I guess.
The valves never closed all the way.
Thats why it would just spin and spin.
No compession with the compression tester.
Must be the valves.
Adjusted the valves.
Now it goes rarw rarw pop.
Dead batt. LOL.
I think we got it. We are charging it now.
Man you can really tell the difference in cranking now.
I will post again once we get it started.
