91 roof rack help

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I bought a 1991 fj80. It does not have a roof rack. Would there be any reason to look for a factory rack off of another fj80, or should i buy an aftermarket rack ? any thoughts? thank you.

I have a 91,with factory rack.I would go with aftermarket so you dont put alot of holes in your roof. Mike

Be glad you dont have a factory rack.

Do a couple searches here on 'mud and you will quickly learn why.

There are plenty of inexpensive nice racks going all the way up to expensive really nice rack options.

Based on your post, I did a search and wasnt able to find anything as to why the factory racks are so bad. The only relevant thread I found had to do with body filler at the rain gutter rails; maybe I'm missing something?

DLP- I have a Defender rack temporarily mounted to my factory rack. It fits the area behind the sun roof perfectly, and sits right on top of the factory rails.

The factory racks the the USA got are a port installed option. They drilled holes in the roofs, inserted nutserts, and that what holds the racks on.

Now fast forward 17 years, the nutserts did not have enough (any?) rust prevention. So under the rubber gaskets that mount to the roof panel, there will be rust.

The factory rack IMO were a poorly thought out design.

You have what almost all mud members want, no factory rack.

This said, I have a factory rack, and have no real intentions on removing it, as I don't want to deal with the holes.

I use the "Titles only" so I'm thinking that may be my limiting factor, using similar search terms.

Looks to be quite the issue with rust though....add another item to the list to check on.
