I have a '91 80 that will start up just fine and then when I park her after a good drive and go to start it it will turn over fast (batt. seems fine) but won't "catch" and fire. One time I let it sit overnight came out and she started right up! I had heard there was a wire somewhere that was famous for heating up and preventing it from starting. Is this true? Would that wire be around an FI relay or something?

Thanks!

Two things could be of issue. The first is likely where to start.

Go get a new EFI relay. Replace that relay when it will not start and see what gives. Yes it has been narrowed down to the TE1 to E1 terminal wire. We'll see if someone can post-up a diagram. If I recall, it is like a 12 or 14ga wire. I think replacing it to a 10ga would suffice. I did it a long time ago, but I still get that no-starty issue every once in a while, I just keep two spare EFI relays in the truck--it takes 30 seconds to change out. Oh yeah and leather gloves those things get HOT!

The second could be the distributor. There is a coil in there that if the wire deteriorates it will pull far enough apart from itself when hot to not have contact or transfer enough over an arc.

No problem. Like I said I will still have a no start issue every once in a while even after replacing the wire (Mostly on trails like Prichett when its HOT out and I am working the truck hard) but its been reduced since the replacement and the relay switch-out has never failed me yet.

Are you getting spark when it won't start? This could be ignition related, so try and check for spark or try to listen for the fuel pump to come on when the switch is turned. Have you done any fuel system maintenance?

Same problem

I had the same problem for months and i tried everything i could find/think of. It ended up being the fuel pump. The one way check valve was leaking back so there was no pressure and it took a little while to get gas into the engine. If you do replace it, take out the second row seats and pull back the carpet to reveal an access panel which will make it a lot easier!

Check out this site. first link about the crank no fire. Jon's information help me pin down my problem... He is in many threads regarding the topic.

Now dont be cheap, like me, and wait 2 years to fix it. Finally found a competent garage for electrical work( who would take the time) . They replaced the degraded wire (that was over heating) in the wiring harness and the whole plug under the fuse in the Relay Box.

I did not want to suffer through another summer of popping the hood and changing the fuse every time I stopped around town;)

I don't think it's fuel or spark. I suppose it could be but like I said - it will start after you let it "rest" for a long time.

That EFI relay is $120! Wow! Oh well, if I have to get it...

I have a schematic for it - where would the offending "over-heating" wire be located? Is it on the ECU plug or in the fuse box under the hood?

Thanks again for all the help! Toyota electrics are almost as offensive as Rover electrics!

The hits keep coming!

So I went out to work on the 80. I had to charge the battery and when I tried to fire it up it wouldn't even turn over. Now it just clicks at the starter solenoid. I cleaned the main wire at starter/solenoid and still get just clicks. Is it time for a new starter? I did check the fuse-able links at batt. and they appear to be fine - I would think if it''s getting power to starter and the links are good...

that little relay should only be about ten bucks. it is the same standard efi relay in just about every late 80's to early 90's toyota imaginable. i currently have one out of an 89 supra. if you don't trust cheap parts, buy 3 of them. :)

The relay is no more than 12.00. Its in the black fuse box under the hood.THis is only a symptom of the wires under it. Toyota put too small of wires under the box,cut these out and replace with 12 gauge wire. I own a 1991. MIke

LOL. If the motor cranks and doesn't fire then it MUST be either fuel or spark related. Your symptoms sound pretty typical of something in the EFI circuit failing. Have a look at this diagnostic flowchart to help pinpoint the fault.

Thanks Jon!

When I can get the motor to at least turn over I'll go through the flow chart. (I'm getting CEL light and WAS getting the motor to turn over. Now the solenoid just pops.)

I've got a little over 12 volts at the battery so I think its got all of its cells. When she WAS turning over it just would never fire. Then, if you gave it a rest, it would fire right up. Now it just clicks.
