Hey guys

Need some help here

My buddy blew the pass side head gasket in his 91 3l v6

I started to tear it down for him yesterday

Sushi chef must have designed it
Gave blood well working on it

Motor is toasted
Intake full of sludge
Nasty considering this rig uses LPG
PVC issue I am guessing
2-3 injectors bunged up completely and explains why he didn't pass the smog test here

This is not the first hg to be replaced
Last wrench didn't have a torque wrench and sniped the head bolts way over spec
Couldn't get the timing belt gear of drivers side
Impacts
Long bar with 200 lbs and still wouldn't crack

This motor is nfg
I told him look for another motor
Ie
22r

What is involved and is it worth doing this swap
Any other motor that can be put in beside these 3l?

This motor is garbage and not worth even thinkin of rebuilding

Give us some direction
He is into this thing for 7k and doesn't want to scrap it

As always
Thanks for any help you can offer us up

Thats sounds NFG for sure. The 22R swap is not worth it for $ and time spent. You should look at swapping in a 3.4 (5VZ) from a 1996 and up Tacoma or 4Runner, easier swap than a 4 cylinder. Even easier is another 3VZ engine.

3.4 will run 2k here
My buddy has bad luck here with cars

How hard would a 22r be?
I have a line on a rebuilt one with drive train

He runs propane gas so all the injection and sensors are for nothing

Like he said, a 22RE swap is not worth it. You'll need new engine mounts welded to the frame, and a new tranny, plus somehow integrate the wiring harness. A lot of work for less power. The 3VZ is a PITA to work on, but it's a decent engine. You're better off money-wise just sticking with it, even if you have to get another one.

Agreed with the above. If he isn't going to go the 3.4 route then the easiest Is going to be to find a decent 3.0 and drop right back in there. The 22re is a great engine, but for the work involved you would be taking a step backwards in power and technology. Can it be done, yes, is it your best option, not in my option. If he is in it for 7k then what is a couple more for the 3.4 and be done. Also if he is running propane, then stepping back to the 22r would be a bigger step backwards since lp has less potential energy than gasoline and takes more to do the same work. If he wants to run lp and you don't want a 3.0 you shouled look at a small Chevy v6 swap. The 3.0 nor 3.4 never came without EFI and the 22r is, as stated, a step backwards.

Godo luck.
