Am keen to retrofit an 8HP70 automatic to my Cruiser and am reaching out to the IH8MUD community to see if any others have mastered my envisaged conversion from my rebuilt a442f 4 speed bus tranny. Our neighbours in Australia appeared to have mastered the conversion and am in conversation with the folk at 8speed AU - https://www.8speed.au currently.

Y'all might have better luck on some of the Aussie forums as this is NOT a common (or even rare) modification in the US and most of this forum's members are US-based.

En Espanol: Creo que vas a tener mas suerte en los foros Australianos, esa conversion no es muy comun (nunca he oido de nadie haciendola) aqui en USA y la mayoria de los miembros de este foro estan basados en USA. Buena suerte!

Hey mate, I've since completed my 8hp75 conversion in my 80 series, if you have any questions fire away. Also located in NZ

Thanks for your offer of assistance. Am still in the process of accumulating gear and the funds to commission the swap.
Are you able to share some photos? Also keen to know the following.
What system are you running the auto with? Turbo Lamik or something else? I have a Boostec system.
What have you utilised as an oil pan and temperature management system? I note from 8speedau that the auto needs to be assisted in getting up to and maintaining correct operating system temperature.
What have you used as mounts for the gearbox and the gearstick. It may be different on my IFS 100 series.

Running a turbolamik in mine.
Using a oem trans pan, with just an external pair of trans coolers with a thermostat from improved racing. Thermostat opens at 83 degrees off memory, it is very hard to get the trans up to temp especially if open road, I've only managed to get mine to open the thermostat twice, once was thrashing the car through the coromandel ranges, and the other was a dozen or so transbrake launches in 2/3/4gear on the side of a sand dune at poutu.

I've developed my own shifter mount that will be available on my website soon but I am just doing some finishing touches on it, here's a picture of a prototype.

Using a Supra GR shifter part number 33550-WAA02 (RHD), for anyone playing along at home that needs a LHD one heres the part number for that 33550-WAA01.

Transfer case will need you to make some custom bracketry to mount the selector for High/Low range. I just some old awning brackets and went to town with the mig, its mounted off the back of the transfer case and holds the selector under the hole in the trans tunnel.
You'll also need to build/modifiy your existing transmission crossmember to actually hold the zf, I had to drop mine vertically by about 2-3 inches.

Word of advice, my first set of oil I put through the transmission was genuine ZF8 Lifeguard, at some ridiculous cost of like $80per litre or whatever, but penrite sell a fluid specifically for 8hp, and is somewhere around $300nzd for 20L. You'll save a stack of money.

You'll also need to find a reliable source of RPM signal, I've heard the FTE crank signal sensor isn't good enough to provide a signal but this is highly dependent on the TCU you decide to run. (I currently do not have a rpm signal input on my turbolamik as I ran out of time to set one up before a trip.)

There are some differences between the FTE 100 and FT 80 for sure but hopefully this will provide you some scope of what you might be in for.

If you ever venture down into the Waikato give us a heads up as keen to compare notes in person. I have some further preparatory work before doing my conversion and am finding the tips provided by others very helpful. Need to convert back to full time 4WD as well. When I was last on the dyno earlier this year after fitting my new Titanium GTurbo the transfer case lunched itself. Fitted a part time 4WD to get mobile but find it does not suit me for my type of use. My rig makes too much power and tends to get tail happy as have no traction control. Also the p/t 4WD system not able to be operated on tarmac. I am used to the safety and reassurance of full time 4WD and must say it has provided me with a few saves over the years in tricky traction situations.

What transfer case is it? I could be interested to take it off your hands when you change out. I also make big power but 2wd would be a good time 😎

I will need to check out the details but I believe my transfer case on my 100 series is the same as what runs on your 80 series as I also currently run the a442f 4 speed. Its fitted with a Marks p/t kit and was supplied and installed by Trundles. I can put it aside for you once I go back to fulltime 4WD. There are some torsen diff style transfer case upgrades out of PDI in Perth that I am trying to figure out might help to reduce occasional wheel tramp in the front when I get heavy on the load pedal. I am keen to upgrade my return to full time 4WD with this upgrade. All part of the journey of sorting work arounds once you embark on the modification journey.

You have my attention…. Awesome work. I am
In the USA and have 6boost turbo PDI intercooler forged 1FZ. In the USA these trucks LHD spec out A442 in my year.

I am considering taking the plunge into an 8 speed. My 100 is part time V8 supercharged and this LC 80 is full time 4wd with upgraded front Axles and Birfileds.

Now the trans, engine trans adapter, converter adapter to flywheel, rear adapter to transfer case,
Remake transfer case / trans mount, make support for low Hi range shifter. Trans in and 4wd shifter words. Looks like use that part number shifter for LHD model and now electronics …

My truck is full Haltech 2500 with UC-10 and can tape engine rpm from the Haltech what Trans ECU control would you recommend?
I am so very interested in this …

Thanks for much for your time and posting your project.

Forget to ask, the load on trans from engine is it sense internally or external line pressure controlled to not bang into gears light throttle and such?

The transmission line pressure is all digital, and inside the turbolamik software you can setup just how hard you want each of your 8 maps to shift. I have my Map 1 (default) to shift as slow and lazy as possible, for the more authenic sloppy land cruiser experience. Map 2 for me is a sport map, shifts later, harder, faster. Map 3 is the same as 2 but shifter harder. Map 4 I have as full manual mode but with automatic downshifts enabled, this map is standard shift speed and harshness, so its very smooth. Rest of the maps I don't have configured yet.
Here is a screenshot directly from turbolamik manual, this is missing the Automatic Gear Change Down tuning table but can provide some kind of idea of what you'll be in for.

TLDR : Can be as smooth or as rough as you want depending on how you set your maps up.
