I just got a new to me 89 toyota strait Axel. its a 22re with a 5 speed. I have 37/13.5/17 on it with 4.10 gearing i cant even get up to speed my question is what gears would you guys run? id be using the truck for daily driving and also weekend worrier. i will either stay with 37s but might go to 35s. the rear axle is a 96 Tacoma axle and front is a dana 44 thanks any opinions help.

Another vote for 5.29s. Even with those getting 37s rolling is going to be tough. If you are going to use it as your DD, I would change the gears, see how it does and if you need to drop down to the 35s.

Ok so i have decided to go with the 5.29. My next question is how can i tell for sure what my axles are? my rear axle has 96 taco 4x4 wrote in paint pen but before I order wanna make sure also how to I make sure the front is a dana 44

I have a buddy that is running 4:10 with 35s it gets up and moves 5.29 and 37s with a properly tuned 22r or 22re will do fine.

Just read a artical online that says they never made a dana 44 gear set for 5.29? so im stuck scratching my head. as of right now it's hard to take off and get up to speed. I am 17 so really don't wanna buy the wrong gear set

I've run 35's with my 4.88 gears, it's a little too tall, but not too bad. 5.29's would still be better and get you back closer to stock.

Well first how u drive? I'm 17 too and burning gas with my yoda. Do you live in city that you only drive few blocks or do you commute? I live on a small island and I drive 30 miles or so a day. And I have ifs with 4.88 Detroit locker rear and welded front. I ran 35 33 and 31 with this gear. It did great crawling by 31 but commute it does not like but 35 were just too much of clutch burner. If you have a nice tires then if I was you I'd sell the tires and buy 33 run it with your 4.10 and it should be ok and when you have money scraped up get 4.88 then duel transfer-case this will let you drive fine on road and on trail let that girl crawl. At least you don't have to buy a adapter plate for your duel case because I sadly have a v6...
