Oil is leaking from the rear of the engine it seems to be running down along the outer bellhousing but I can't pin point it since the exhaust crossover is in the way,is this a common leak that other have experienced.
The engine has had work done on it previously looking at the gasket sealant on all the top end parts so I would think it is a case of a proper gasket was not used or was not installed properly , I just need some ideas what to look for without doing a tear down...it is spewing fairly heavily even after 10 minutes of idling.

I have no idea what truck your talking about. THe 1989 FJ 62 in your sig never came in a SR5 model, so I am going to have to assume your talking about a 22RE.

I bet your half moon oil seals are leaking. Mine did the same thing once when I didn't tighten up the acorn nuts enough.

Help us help you...always give what your working on...

Regardless of what engine more than likely it could be a leaking rear main seal, though an engine type would help in the diagnosis.

The 22RE is the 4cyl, however I'm not positive that the 22RE came in the SR5 package in 89', likely the 3.0 V6 or the 22RET(turbo).

Oh and sweet 40 series in your avatar, I was a collector of 40's until my bank account could no longer take it, now I'm 1gen 4Runner all the way.

Leaking rear main seal would not drip along the outside of the bellhousing...it would drip from the bottom of the bellhousing. It has to be higher up...which could be only 2 spots, HG or Vlave cover & Half moon seals.

If recent work has been done on the vlave cover, I bet it's the half moon seals leaking.

Yeah my bad, I misread the OP, you are correct

Hooray some one figured it out. Thnx once again KLF
I was getting a little fustrated with the reference to a FJ62 and 22R engine in a 89 SR5 ??

Is a half moon seal found on the V6 or is that a 22R thing.

I have tried to find some EPC schematics and any others that may lead me to the gaskets in the general area but am still a little stumped on where all the oil galleries are in reference to gaskets which would leak from the upper back end of a V6 engine.
I doubt it is a head gasket no oil in the rad and no water in the oil plus no engine lag so I can safely rule out a HG.
If it is the valve cover then it is hidden in the very back end of the cover since there is no sign in the visable areas.
Is there any oil passages under the intake manifold close to the rear of the block or any plugs similar to a freeze plug , Landcruisers have a notorious plug in their block that leaks on almost all 3f motors.

The half moons are on the 22R motors, yours won't have them. If is pronounced and looks like it is coming from the rear of the top half then it is probably the cam seals in the back of the heads. The way the 3.0 heads are made the cams stick thru the front and get a normal seal, the same size hole is also in the back of the head and gets what looks like a big freeze plug with a rubberized coating installed in them. If one of those has moved or if it has deteriorated, then oil would come right on out the ends.

It is either that or the valve cover gaskets, those are the only two spots above the head gasket that would leak oil... I think.
