My transmission is acting up and im not sure what to do... it gets stuck in gear and shudders when it does so, and it is hard to go from one gear to the next. It really only gets stuck in 1st and 2nd gear and this is ONLY when I stop, never does it get stuck just driving. The clutch was replaced 40k miles ago and it is fine, there is no slippage or anything, however i did not put the clutch in myself. When it gets stuck say at a stoplight or something ill try pulling harder and it'll come out but then it refuses to go into any other gear, sometimes grinding when I try to search for gears ill go into. There is plenty of fluid in the transmission, I am using AMS oil in it and the clutch reservoir is full...Any help would be appreciated...

It's possible that the clutch slave or master cylinder is worn and not disengaging the clutch all the way. Does the tranny shift through all the gears easily when its not running. Also checking the shifter is a good easy and cheap place to look as it is very common problem.

Cheap:

Nylon shifter bushing

And shifter seal.....I'd start there, a parts guy at the local Toyota Stealer said guy paid bigggg bucks for a tranny swap, they used the original shifter ala shifter bushing and guess what?....one  dude.

Haha, that just made me laugh my ass off. "one  dude." I would be too!

Well yeah im thinking it does have to do with the clutch because what other reason would it shudder like that?

Is the clutch disengaging all the way?

I had a 4Runner that a previous owner put a cheap clutch in. Instead of springs in the clutch disk there were rubber bushings. They came apart and were tumbling around in between the flyweel and pressure plate. Sometimes the parts would get lodged in the pressure plate and not let the clutch disengage all the way. I replace the master cylinder, slave cylinder and the fluid hard lines before taking the whole tranny out and discovering this.

Well I tried pumping the clutch and it didnt help at all, you just have to fool with it and keep searching for a gear, once it goes in one gear it'll usually go back into all the others without a fight. But sometimes it'll grind, he put a toyota clutch back into it. Maybe he did something wrong... I wish I knew more about transmissions, but its the only vehicle I have to drive, if I take it apart it may not ever come back together.

It actually seems to help if I double clutch between gears, I hope I am double clutching correctly.

In first gear run it up to about 3000 rpm, and get off of the throttle. As soon as the drive train is unloaded, slip it out of first without clutching and gently hold the stick against the second gear synchro as the rpms fall back to idle. It should feel nice & smooth, no noise or vibration. When engine rpms match road speed it should just slip in to second. If this works smoothly and quietly, then look at your slave & master, if it doesn't look at your synchros
