My buddy has a 88 pickup and he was saying it doesn't have power steering. I haven't had a chance to look at the gear box, but did they even offer that option or was it the PO removed hoses and pump?

Thanks,
Brittain

Ok, I'll take good look tomorrow. He said it looked like the only place for a pump to go on his engine is on the passenger side.

Thanks for the help so far.

I had an 1986 2wd with no power steering
I have a 1984 2wd camper with no power steering
I have a 1992 4x4 with no power steering

See a pattern, Man that sucks!:bang: My 1992 is a base model and also has no intermittent wipers which sucks too. I have a newer steering wheel and will upgrade this soon too.

All my trucks are 22re so the v6 may be different, I don't know.

I have collected power steering boxes, hoses, pulleys, and all the parts so that I can convert my two trucks to power steering. It is not hard. Go to a junk yard and pull all the parts you will need, or have them pull it, or find them from local Toyota junkies. Take pictures before and during removal, or from other trucks with the PS option, then put them back on your truck.

I am not 100% sure about the 1990's trucks but I think they are the same as the 80's trucks. One bracket mounts to the block with the pump....hose over to reservoir mounted on DS fender....hose down to PS box....hose back up to pump.

I think this is correct. I am still looking into it and have only started on one of my trucks. I will start this on the 1992 truck in a couple of weeks and do a write up on it as I go. I will put the link in this post once I get it started.

If anyone else has info on the upgrade feel free to post it here to help out with the conversion.

Thanks meigsrock! I know he has a 88 4x4 with the 22re. I'll let everyone know what I find out when I look at his truck.

I had an '88 4x4 with no power steering. Can't remember about the intermittent wipers though. Made me glad every time I hopped back in my 4runner and didn't have to strong-arm it.

It's true, not very hard to swap it to PS. If I remember right, you can almost just pull the whole system out as one piece and swap them out. The cooler makes it a little harder, but not impossible.

Turning the little 26" tires on the 2wd models is not a big deal with no power steering but once you get to 29+ it is harder. I have driven mine for 2 years like it is and even had 33's on it last summer and it really was not any worse than the wit the 30's. No off road for me yet, just street so far. It defiantly lets you appreciate PS once you drive with it. Makes jumping in my FJ60 really nice.

My '86 mini didn't have PS. It was a workout driving it off road w/ 33's.:D Swapped in PS parts and was a lot happier.:)

Hey guys I'm new to this forum stuff so sorry if i don't understand the wordage tossed around sometimes (and i dont know how all this forum stuff works let ether). I was looking for a Manual steering box for the 86-95 pick ups or 4runners. message me or post on here if you would like to get rid of one. Im in Tucson AZ so if your close thats awesome but if not I'm sure we could work some shipping out or something. Thanks Alot!

power steering

I have two PS boxes for my 1990 pickup. They both leak fluid out the top. has anybody done a reseal of o-rings etc while on the truck? Should I just re=seal the one that is off the truck? Steering won't fail, it just makes a some noise and the vane pump will blow eventually.
