1987 4runner. 22rte. auto tranny.I finished a head gaskest and timing chain this week end. motor pops right off. sounds great for the 2seconds it runns, then dies. as soon as it dies, i turn the key and it starts right up. runns for 2-3 seconds and dies. if i give it a little gas, it seems to kill the engine or flood it. anyone have any ideas??

Check the connector for the MAF sensor on top of the air box. Sounds to me like the pump is running during the cranking, but as soon as you release the key the pump stops running, and it dies.

If that doesn't help, make a jumper out of a paperclip, short it across the B+ and Fp connectors in the diagnostic connector under the hood. See if it keeps running.

The plug is right behind the battery & fusebox on the passenger side. The terminals are labeled with a sticker under the cap.

could it be running on the cold start and then not on the injectors?

I have witnessed froze up injectors on a vehicle that has sit for a very short period of time, and not allowed it to run. We then tapped on the injectors and it immediately fired up. Is it possible the injectors are air locked?

"tapping" involves a long 3/8's extension and touching the injector and tapping...NOT HITTING on it so shock can break what ever hold (lacquered fuel, air lock) is on the injectors

Thanks tntoyota. Tapped on the injectors, I think it helped. I had to hook the intake boot to the plenum to keep it running, before didnt matter either way. Still wont idle, but stays running with a little throttle. Blows white smoke and smells rich, not sweet. Cant seem to get the distributor just right. I checked, double checked, and tripple checked the chain and sprockets positions before slipping the timing cover on. the crank was at twelve o'clock and #1 piston was TDC. I wont have a chance to play with it until this weekend. Post back then. Any input or ideas is greatly appreciated.

yes, i think it was a combo of not having everything hooked up and something with the injectors. its running better and better. it was blowing blue smoke, but that stopped now also. i cant believe the power difference now, compared to before. finally got a timing light, so tonite i will try fine tuning the distributor.
