picked up an 87 runner with a bad motor from a kid that just bought it to fix and found something better. the story the p.o. told him was he had the motor rebuilt but shortly after it started making noise, so he drove it 'until it stopped'

pulling motor, everything seems to match the story. looks like a rod cap nut wasn't torqued, came loose and the bolt stretched and eventuallysnapped. this severly distorted the cap which probably got wedged in the block.

picked up a cheap rebuild kit from lce. head looks great, no indication that piston hit it, so i left it alone. block got a quick hone and back together with a donor crank and rod and the new pistons/rings/brgs etc from the kit. since i had a new timing chain and oil pump in rebuild kit, i used those also.

get everything and it cranks but does not fire, no pop, nothing...just cranking engine.

today, pulled #1 plug and turned crank to tdc (confirmed by hearing the compression escape a hole plugged by a finger and reaching in the plug hole with screwdriver and finding top of piston). pulled valve cover and confirmed the pin for the cam gear is straight up and the #1 levers are loose. pulled dizzy cap and confirmed rotor pointed to number one.

have good fuel pressure at through filter as confirmed by leaking brand new oem filter (had to reuse old filter). tomorrow, plan is to spray in starting fluid to see if it runs and test for fuel getting past filter (i'm guessing pulling csi should verify if line from filter up is plugged).

other ideas?

have done seven or eight 30 second cranks and while the plug smells like fuel, it's not wet.

Have you checked for spark?

Checked the ECU for any codes?

Try jumpering the Fp and B+ contacts in the Diagnostic connector behind the fusebox under the hood. Then turn the key to ON. You should be able to hear the fuel pump running, and fuel hissing through the injector rail and past the pressure regulator. If so, see if it starts with the jumper in place.

do have spark and jumping the terminals on the timing plug, i get no flashing check engine light, just solid.

fuel system is on board for tomorrow. hopefully it won't be :bang:

woooohooooo!!! blast of starting fluid was all she took. buttoning things up for test drive, then it's get a permit and drive it hard to break engine in and hopefully get rings to seat before etest.

ok, starts and runs every time. there is an occasional hiccup, but it's few and far between, but it does throw check engine light after a few minutes of running. does not throw a code at either diagnostic port or the timing plug and the light goes away when you shut off the engine. comes back on a few minutes after you fire it up.

fluids are full, everything seems copacetic
any clues?

I'm not sure what you mean by this. And yes the CEL will shut off when you turn the key off.

Make a jumper out of a paper clip, jumper the TE1 and E1 connectors in the Diagnostic port behind the fusebox. Turn the key to ON. Count the flashes of the CEL. Here's a doc with the codes:
