I was born in Vancouver and have lived here all my life. I have to agree with Martin and Brown Bear, Vancouver is in crisis. The thing is, the world is changing and growth is out of control all over. There's too many people and a lot of them would give anything to live here. The U.N. consistantly ranks Vancouver among the top cities of the world along with Geneva and Zurich. People with money are willing to pay whatever it takes to come here. Meanwhile, people with average incomes are being squeezed out and can't afford to stay here. This actually is nothing new. Many Hawaiians, years ago, were squeezed out of Hawaii and now live in California. Many Thai families who have lived in Phuket for generations, can no longer live there because of the rising cost of property and living. Even in our Canadian Gulf Islands out here, the lower income people are being displaced as the islands' economies switch to resort destinations and wealthy people's recreational playground. I don't know the answer although I do know that some European countries, like Holland and Italy, do restrict unlimited growth is some areas. For example, the Sienna area of Italy has little hilltop villages where no cars are allowed in, and you must have a job there before you can move in. Course, the gung ho capitalists of corporate North America would never stand for restrictions like that. In our system of corporate rule, ever expanding development is a religion and any heretics will be burned at the stake, post haste.
As for me, I bike now most of the time and leave the car in the garage. I expect some day I will be unable to afford the property taxes on my modest place here and will have to move on. Some wealthy person will tear down my little old bungalow and put up a McMansion. City Hall will be very pleased because they will be able to rip off even more outrageous taxes.

Wait a minute, tell me more about the Shell cardlock in Chilliwack for 84.9 - does that mean anyone with a credit card can go there? Or do you need one of their cards? A price like that makes the drive worthwhile for me as I am often in Chilliwack anyhow. Where is it? Please educate me....

I do cardlock purchases in Smithers. I pay about 7-10 cents cheaper than the pump price. SO take thats 10 cents cheaper than the city. 17 cents or so cheaper than what is posted in Vancouver.

I've never had as low as 84 for bit. I average around 90 cents a litre for diesel. Sometimes 96, sometimes 88.

I get billed monthly. It's a great way to buy fuel.

I have no clue as to your original question, but I can speak to carfax/nada repotrs.

I had a 72 2002Tii BMW that was bought by my Father new in 72. Our family owned it it's entire life, when we went to sell it in 2001 the buyer ran both & they both had a "salvage event" in 1990 (which never happened)

I have also seen where major accidents happened but were not on the record (friends' vehicles)

Take these reports with a grain of salt & just be aware as to the warning signs of major repairs.

Good luck.

That is the one. I haven't been there yet but am planning on it one this tank of B40 gets low. At $0.10 / l cheaper, it saves me $6-8 depending on how low I willing to let the tank get - usually fill up on just below the 1/4 mark. There should be no reason why just the tuckers and corporate boys get to use the card locks. Martin, i think I will check out the Shell card lock here also. Last time I filled up at a card lock was in Osooyos and paid $0.12/l more than retail here in Abby. But that was a Husky which took credit cards. I presume the truckers are not paying the price on the pump.

Out of the two local Shell/Flying J's I usually use here the Sherwood Park location has a completely separate 14 pump fueling "island" for light vehicles that you can pay at the pump or inside. The other one I use is a cardlock station/bulk lubricant station and all you need to do is leave a credit card etc. with the attendant and they will turn on the pump for you.

I think I have been at the one in the ‘wack a couple of times but with a much larger vehicle and a fleet card…

this station sounds like a good place for you to bring a couple drums with to fill up. I think if I lived in the transit tax area I would be doing that. :)

thanks for the info on the carfax. I did not think they were the best thing. In fact I think they are only a USA thing. As I just don't think I've heard of canadian vehicles using it....

weird how it showed a salvage title...

Diesel actually dropped in price on the Long Weekend, of course I was filling up my gas 4Runner today.

first, if you are going to buy an 80 get one with f/r lockers. second, don't worry about mileage, focus on lockers and a clean stock truck. those qualities are too rare for you to pass up something. fourth, just troll autotrader across the us. the importing is no big deal and the shipping cost will be cheaper than the markup here even if you use a tow service to get it across the border into a bonded customs yard and pay a broker to clear it for you, plus 99% of the auction specials being retailed here have no lockers and the dealers are acutely aware of their value and charge a premium. if you find one, post up in chat to see if someone can look for you.

fifth, there is an 80 series in a front yard with a for sale sign in the window in the ok valley which has been there at least two months. white, stock, with a sombrero grill so 95-97 and i saw no visible damage from the road. I will likely be back by there in a couple of weeks and can try to pull the ph# if you are interested.

Hey Semlin, sure grab the #

good advice. Would you use the rail service that brings it in? I think I read that in one of your posts once...

I know lockers make it much more valuable... but this vehicle would be primarily my wifes vehicle. So while lockers would be fun for me, my wife doesn't need them. Good condition is primary though.

Have you seen Sheldon's truck? My aim is to do a 1hd-t swap into one. Then keep it for many many years.

weird. turns up out of the blue i'm going up there tomorrow so i'll try to grab the #.

if you are going to the trouble of a diesel swap i'd say having the lockers is even more crucial. your best market for a lhd us legal 1hdt 80 if you ever sell is right here on mud and probably south of the border. lockers would be a big consideration for any mud buyer and would "perfect" the truck for most.

searail was better on price for east coast us trucks but not west coast when i inquired some years ago. for you not being able to just go down to blaine and meet the shipper and d-i-y they are set up with the customs broker/bonded warehouse deal though which most auto shippers can't do, especially the cheapest ones you find on www.uship.com. I also wonder whether searail might be able to deliver to a prince rupert customs yard for the same price as vancouver.

Hey I never thought of the Prince rupert customs yard.... I wonder if Searail would do that.

Yah I think your for sure correct that if I went to the cost of putting a diesel in an 80 gasser than having lockers would make it much easier to sell later if needed... Good point.

Hey Brownbear. Are you still looking for an 80? Some one I know is going to be putting their 1996 up for sale in the next 2 -3 weeks. It's fully loaded, lockers and all. I think 163,000 miles. It's been in the family for a number of years. Serviced regularly by a certified Toyota mechanic. Dark green w/t light tan interior. Let me know.

What about picking up an LX450? They are getting pretty cheap now and I've never seen one in Vancouver that looked like it had been further into the dirt than the edge of a driveway.

I actually just picked up Ambrose's FJ80 for the wife. The price was low and it was in good shape.

No lockers... but honestly it is for my wife and will never see a trail. I tried playing around with it on a rutted hill last night and it was soo low stock it rubbed everything... so no MY BJ60 is the trail truck.

The 91 Ambrose had , has leather, and all the goodies. Ran like a top all the way from Vancouver to Smithers. BUT it is going to get a diesel in the new year sometime. I am slowly figuring out what I want.

Cheers and thanks, Darryl

congrats on the purchase. a 91 is a perfect diesel swap candidate. you can always go arb if you ever want lockers.

incidentally, the 91 didn't come with leather afaik although some dealers did re-cover cloth seats. are these power adjusted seats or manual?

They are manual seats.

Interesting for sure with this truck. The leather must be stock IMOP. It screams stock.

The previous previous owner Jcolvin. Said he thought it was lexus when new...??

But everything on it says Toyota, and there is no lexus anything on it.

Yah for sure it is getting a diesel transplant in the near future. The 3fe is nice to drive, but the economy almost makes me cry LOL... I only recorded it once on my trip to Smithers from Vancouver and I got 20 Litres per 100k. About double of my BJ60. But I was doing 70 mph all the time. Which is something the 3B cannot do.
