I have a 97 FZJ80 with OME suspension, 295/75R16 on stock rims, factory lockers, and ARB bull bar. I am sitting on 177,000 and I use it as my daily driver.

I have a whine when I put any pressure on the gas; no gas, no whine. I replaced the pinion bearings and had Iron Pig Offroad set up the third member before I reinstaled it. I also repacked the rear wheel bearings. I replaced the rear output bearing and support in my tcase. I removed the rear drive shaft and drove with the center diff locked and the truck was quite. I would like to narrow down my problem before I replace anything else or go insane!!

check your intake could be a hole in your hose and your hearing too much air being sucked in...

Friend of mines has it in the front belt area. It's more of a Turbo whir.

Whoops read more. Sounds like a vacuum to me.

Did you do all that work to try to eliminate and possibly find the source of the sound????

WOW

Yes I did all that to try and fix the whine. Iron Pig (Virginia) found that I had a little play in my pinion bearings ( I could slightly move the rear yoke side to side) (Sorry if I screw up any terms). So I figured that is why I had the whine. But I still had the whine after the bearings were replaced. I have a bad feeling that my third member was set up incorrect. This problem has been driving me crazy for almost 9 months (about 10k miles). I drove it from Virginia to Florida with the whine. This afternoon I crawled under my truck and noticed my pinion seal is starting to leak. I hope this is confirming that the problem is in the rear end. My biggest debate is if I should install a used one complete or try and rebuild this one; again! I currently live in Milton FL. I wish I knew of a shop around here I could trust, any ideas?

Two:

1: and you've checked the Tranns/ T.C's fluid level I presume?

And 2: Is this noise present with the gear selector in neutral, and revving it??

The trans fluid is good. quiet in nuetral. It is quiet until I touch the gas when driving, and I mean just touch the gas. You can really tell when I use cruise control. I was amazed at how quiet my truck was when I drove with just the front drive shaft. When I pulled the rear drive shaft out I cleaned it and checked the u joints.

I got same sound after I installed a locking rear diff from a 97. My 96 diff didn't make the noise.

Buddy has a 97 and has the same noise.

Let me know if you figure it out.

How was the center diff's oil level?

And once again just so I know. No noise in N, with revving the engine?(not driving TESTING)

No noise in N when revving the engine. I changed the oil in the t case when I replace the rear output bearing and filled it with 2 quarts.

I'd use the garden hose trick to figure out which component is doing it. Buy a cheap 50 foot garden hose (or use your old one and buy a new one to replace it) and cut it into sections long enough to go from all three differentials into the driver's rear window. Use duct tape to hold it all well and use your head so it won't get caught on something while you're driving. Now at the speed you hear it, listen in turn to each one. It will be painfully obvious which component it is. Jamb the end of the hose directly against the component and duct tape it in place securely for maximum listening ability and obviously completely seal it off against wind whistling.

If you have to rebuild a 3rd, be sure to check with Cdan on the price of an entire 3rd from Toyota as we put a new one in my bro in law's for half what the local shops wanted to "rebuild" it (translation: screw it up for us). It comes completely set up and ready to merely pop in for 3 banana skills - no lash adjustments needed.

I have a '97 and have this same issue. The whine is almost like a turbo spooling and it's only when I put any pressure on the gas pedal. I wonder if it's a '97 specific issue?

Hope you can narrow it down since it sounds like you're not the only one with this problem.

Cheers,
Salue

Did I understand correctly that you removed the rear shaft and no more whine?

How tall is your lift? In my mini-truck, using U-joints at both ends (no CVs), when the lift was too high and they were out of phase, it made a whine noise and only did so while under a load. No gas, no load, no noise.

It's just another place to consider.

The garden hose trick sounds great, I will try it. I was quoted $500 for a ready to install third member from a cruiser graveyard. Toyota wanted $1500 bucks for a new one. I allready spent $400 bucks rebuilding the one that I believe is the problem.

How do these numbers sound?

It has a 2.5 OME heavy duty lift.

It's been 5 years, but we paid about $700 for a complete new Toyota front 3rd. Did that 1500 price come from a Toyota dealer, or Dan? Sounds high.

It came from a toyota dealer. I move around alot due to my job so it is hard to make friends and contacts in the LC world. How do I contact Dan?

1-800-432-6668 is American Toyota in NM. Tell the parts person who answers that you're from the Mud LandCruiser forum. I think Dan is extension 8.

I have the same sound with my 97, and it is mostly stock. Just when accelerating at higher speeds (30+mph). It doesn't seem to have any affect on the performance. It almost sounds like a fuel pump or fuel filter issue to me but I'm no expert. It just sounds like it is fuel pump or fuel delivery related. Just my .02 Good luck, I'm definitely interested in a solution if it is a problem.

What did you find when you pulled the rear DS? With the rear DS removed its not making this sound any longer or is it less noticeable? Is it a stock DS I would presume so with 2.5 lift but you never know......

For the OP, no rear drive shaft no noise then it seems like it's back there some where. If the pinion bearing was worn to the point of needing to be replaced then the gears might be gone as well. Are they factory or did you regear? I had Yukons put in my rear diff and they whined for about 100k miles. Took some time to break them in.

Others, an on throttle whine at speed is usually the exhaust system. Mine did that until it was replaced.
