I know Boss makes a couple CarPlay units including some with oversized screens that have knobs. They're affordable, but I've never seen one in person. I think they do have capacitive screens and seem to check off all the right boxes, but the Boss brand makes me uncomfortable. I generally prefer sticking with one of the big boys for head units, especially a CarPlay unit where software or firmware updates may be needed down the road to maintain compatibility with the newest phones.

My only experience with Boss was a few months ago. I was replacing 4" dash speakers in my Prado and figured at that size, there couldn't be much difference in sound quality so I went with an inexpensive Boss model. They were awful... worse than the 28 yr old paper cone speakers I was replacing. I ended up throwing the Boss speakers in the trash and bought a bigger brand that finally did the trick (I think this time I experimented with Kicker, but I usually go Infinity, Alpine, or Polk for car speakers).
Are you talking about BOSE?
I've used them for over 20 years. In car, in house and in studio and they have always been perfect in every way. But I've only ever used there speakers never anything digital.
Unless Boss is a company I've not heard of before.
PS BOSE customer service is second to none.

Definitely meant Boss or maybe it's BOSS. I have not used one but I see them all the time on Crutchfield and have been tempted because of the price point. Here's a link to one... nothing implied or recommended by me in the link, it just popped up on Crutchfield's site as one of the first and cheapest solutions.

I'd love to hear feedback if anyone has used them. The reviews on Crutchfield seem OK. I would guess the customer support isn't as good with the bigger named brands, but for 1/2 the price, maybe these are good options for 25+ yr old cars.

Big difference between BOSS and Bose - BIG DIFFERENCE! Like opposite ends of the quality spectrum. I've owned both.

I've got a BOSS BV9386NV head unit in my 2003 Ranger. I can't recommend it to anyone. I wanted a reasonably priced double din with GPS and thumb drive capability. If I try to run both functions at the same time the unit will either lock up and need a power reset. Or it will give a symptom of being totally dead. Both quirks need to be reset by pulling the fuse, which then requires resetting all "saved" settings. The touch screen is overly sensitive and is hard to use. Not fun at all. I'd save my money and get a higher quality unit. Yeah, probably not what you want to hear, but I'm pretty convinced that's why they're priced as such. Hit or miss quality. You may get one with out any flaws, but how many times do you want to tear into your dashboard? Another thing, if you've never experienced a touch screen in an automobile, you're in for some disappointments and surprises. Extreme temps and vibration is not the ideal environment for a touch screen! Couple that with an economy class head unit and the results are not often pretty.

I did a head unit install this weekend. I decided to go for a bigger screen 10.1 inch that has built in CarPlay/android auto as well as support for front and rear cameras. That was all I was looking for. Some of the android head units have too many features and without an internet connection don't give you much. I have an android unit in my other car and I just use it for CarPlay.

Links to what I put in.
Head Unit Wire Harness $5
Head Unit (Linux based, supports CarPlay) $219
Camera $39 x2 (front and rear)

Happy to answer any questions.
Hey. I saw you installed the larger Atoto headhunt on your 80 series a couple years back (?). Considering on for my 80 series because of the physical buttons.
- How have you found the overall experience? I've read reports of them both being great and also being laggy/unresponsive. Do you run wireless or wired CarPlay?
- Can the larger screen be twisted/tilted up towards you?
- Would you recommend this?

Thanks for any advice!

I just bought a generic cheap unit from ebay, direct from China. Here's the one I got:
At the time the price was $63AUD, a steal. Came with an inbuilt GPS function too. I got this ISO adapter harness:
So around $70AUD all up. Here's it installed:

Gives me AM/FM radio, bluetooth from my phone, offline maps navigation (handy for remote places without cell signal, which are very common here in Australia), and it's hooked up to the reverse camera, which is the main reason I wanted a 2-din fullscreen unit like this. I hooked the camera up with that rear heater button you see on the bottom right. The "LO" position is "Auto", which means the camera will come on automatically (within 1s) as soon as I pop the car into reverse, and turn off when I go out of it. The "HI" position turns the camera on manually regardless of which gear I'm in, and center position is off. When I get a label maker which can print white on clear, I'll re-label the button.
wow cheap. a few Q's: hows the audio sound quality? screen clarity? and can you run a second reversing camera for a caravan?

Sound quality is as good as you get from stock speakers - I haven't changed them. I'm a sceptic of how much difference head units make with audio quality at all frankly, it's just a DAC running into a MOSFET, not much to screw up there, and they're all made on the cheap out of a factory in China or Taiwan, same same.

Screen is clear enough, certanly more than adequate for a reverse camera fine.

There are two video inputs, one dedicated reverse camera, one "aux", so you can do two camera inputs on the head unit. I actually have two different reverse cameras on my 80 actually, one at bumper level, one up high, but I got fancy with some dash switches and manage this outside the head unit. I can switch between the two cameras and set them to auto (comes on automatically in reverse), always off, or always on.

I went from jdm japanese only jdm double din touch screen head unit to this single din with storage compartment.
I realized that any touch screen display will sit way too low to be practically usable. I also wanted an oem look. Since 90's cars do not have a lot of storage, it helped me in my decisions so that i could also get a storage compartment for wallet and phone, etc.

I chose the blaupunkt Frankfurt rcm82, its got phone connection, blutooth, sd/usb slot/aux input / remote usb input, oem look and also RGB led backlight that can be adjusted to be any color you want or (Toyota oem green)

@charlay61 that's the first aftermarket stereo setup that I've seen that actually has me considering the change from original. We currently have too much fun digging out and playing cassettes from my old collection but the storage and integrated phone/bluetooth connections (vs. the antennae adapter I use) would be nice.

thanks for sharing

Indeed thats a Bremen SQR 46 DAB, and I intend to get one when I can budge on spending $450 on a head unit. Looks great @charlay61

Does pulling the head unit require removing the dash facia and all that involves?
-Remove Ashtray
-Remove upper cup holder or blanking plate, held by 2 screws
-Remove the 2 screws behind the ashtray
-Gently wiggle the facia and it should unclip rather easily.
-Leave the facia hanging and you'll have to disconnect various plugs: (hvac ctrl, hazard switch, cdl switch, rear fan switch, rear defrost switch, antenna ctrl and some lights)

You will have full access to the 4 screws holding the head unit in place.

I always find myself looking at the layout of the dash and thinking that a person with a decent 3d scanner could scan the original stereo/climate fascia and design one for a much larger vertical screen. Lose the ashtray, the lighter and that useless mystery panel, crowd the button inserts over a touch so you have 3 above and 3 below the climate control and voila... real estate to basically flush fit maybe a 10" screen. You'd need a large format printer to handle it, but there are plenty of services that will do that stuff for you these days. Have it printed in ABS or better yet, ASA. Probably have to smooth it out, but done right it would really modernize the feel of the vehicle a lot. I'm way too busy, but one of you guys should totally do this... 😉

I'd nominate @Outsane

I'm commenting on the off chance someone does this. The main issue I see with the current double-DIN solutions is that the screen isn't facing toward the driver at all, and it's hard to see looking down on it from the driver's seat but also a potential distraction from the eyes on the road. If there was a solution which could angle the DIN slots up and to the right/left a bit (depending on left/right side drive) this would be a great improvement.

Well, there's a thread here where someone basically swapped the air vents and the radio location, but that was a lot of work.

Nowadays, you're better off getting a radio with an "external" display that you can tilt and angle towards the driver. Some of them can also be mounted remotely from the radio itself, so you could put it wherever you want.
