Ok it seems im running into an issure with the regulator. I need a regulator that will accept the small propane bottles (i really want to be able to run these) but the exit is just a small propan hose. then i need a small ball valve to adjust the heat level. doesnt any one have agood source? ive looked all over but most places sell parts by numbers and that does me no good as im not repairing anything im building.

any thoughts

mike

You might look on the company websites for complete stoves that use a regulator you could use. You might be able to find blow-ups of the assembled unit to reference the part numbers.

This would be much easier if you had made a charcoal BBQ instead.

heres the problem, the original plan was to have the regulator inside the tail gate. you simply put down the gate screw inthe bottle and your up and running. the regulator you show would mean the bottle would have to come out the bottom ont he tail gate, i was trying to avoid that if at all possible but now i may not be able to. the idea was to make this gate so you wouldnt even know the grill was in it until you opend it up. i need a out he side regulator that i can mount in the tail gate at a slight angle so as the small bottles will work. from there i need a seperate adjust valve so i can mount it to the surface of the grill. any one have a old gas home stove they could look inside?

thanks

got it - have you considered a flexible hose for the reg mount? or sending the hose and reg out to a larger mounted tank?

i had thought about that and it would make things quite a bit easier however i think one of the coolest parts of this mod would be just screwing a small bottle into it and being ready. granted you would still be able to run the larger tanks no matter what with the adapter hose they sell. the middle compartment of the gate holds 2 small bottles perfect and the gate is vented to the outside so would be nice to have a bottle in there at back up with out taking up room. My next thought it drilling a hole strait down under the stove pan and covering the hole frok the outside with the 4 wheel drive emblem. so you move the emblem like the rear lock and then screw a bottle in. any t houghts on this idea?

I have thought about this a little more and only one question comes to mind. I don't forsee a problem with the shielding of the lower tailgate itself but what about the amount of heat that will rise and impact the upper gate when in use? Although I'm sure you probably already thought this through and I truly don't do to much cooking when out camping as a usually try to pack things that don't require a stove but it was just a thought that occured to me.

You could always flip down the hatch if things really started cookin.. that would keep the smoke out of the truck as well. But it also shuts you off from the rest of the kitchen.

They sell those "fill kits" for small propane bottles, where one end screws on a BBQ tank, the other to a small green bottle. would that fitting move you in the right direction?

Mike, I was out camping last night and thought about one issue. Sometimes in the heat the OEM gas tank can create vapor out through the gas filler neck - just something to be aware of when you are making a flaming moe off your tailgate cooker...

I would check and double check all the possible scenarios; otherwise, you may end up winning a darwin award.

thats a damn fine idea except the probem im having is the regualtors im finding are male and the small bottles are male. i need a lard regualtor (those used on bid tanks which is male) to a small bottle (which would need to be female)

as for the heat i really dont think this will be a problem. consider your home stove which is rated much higher then this will be and the heat it puts off.

desertdude as for this concern it was also a though of mine which is why i put the burner on the right side of the truck. however this is an out door grill there will always be wind and such unless you have a ton of gas fumes (a problem in itself) i dont see there being any issues. i replaced my gas gap fairly recently and theres not even a hint of a gas smell when smeeling for it.

stay tuned for more info and thanks for the thoughts these are all great points

Well after a considerable amount of thought ive decieded to scap the green 80 series stove, this project (unfinished) is avaliable if any one would like to buy it for $100 plus pick up. However this project is not dead. i have decided that the way i went about the stove in the green tail gate was not enough for my taste and ive decided i will indeed cut up my original lx450 tail gate to make room for this bad boy.
