80/60 Gearing

Could some one tell me if the gears from an 80 series could be used in a 60 and vice versa? I am thinking of putting the 4:56 from my 60 in the 80 if it is possible. Thanks.

The 80 has a smaller, high pinion front diff, does it not?

I'm sure other's will confirm. Norm is right about the front, I believe the rear is the same. The overall axle housing length on an 80 I believe is wider. But then again, I could be completely out to lunch.

I think the third from a 80 will go into the 60 housing but i don't think the 60 third will go in the 80 housing. If your talking ring & pinion swaping between thirds then no way any way.

So I guess the third member swap idea is dead?

For the rear you should be ok swapping either way it's just the fronts that won't.
