The speedometer that came in our 73 fj40 wasn't working. The guy threw in another speedometer. The backs of the speedometer are different.

Is it possible to get an adapter to get the 2nd one to work.

We have already pulled the working one apart and cleaned it.

Any ideas?

No, there is no adapter to retrofit gauge clusters.

What exactly was not working on the 73 cluster? It's probably not a difficult fix.

A Factory Service Manual (FSM) would be a big help. There are copies online.
This thread should help as well.

It is possible to use a later cluster in an early rig. You will need the barrel connecter from the newer cluster and then splice the old wires to it. Not too bad to do.
You will also need the correct style speedo cable.....probably the clip on style verses the older screw in style.

FYI 73 is a one year only cluster. It dooes not have the round plug for wiring but the turn signal indicators were in the face of speedometer. Verified what you have. Speedometer 9/72-9/73 is different than other years.
