69 carb on 71 issue with carb spacer

Hello we have a 71 FJ55 and I just purchased and rebuilt a carb from a 69

The carburetor that came with the truck was a eBay cheap carb and the vehicle was able to run and drive, but obviously wanting to go with original as it didn’t run and drive good and who knows what issues the carburetor had

I found this carburetor and disassembled dipped the entire carburetor and rebuilt everything with new gaskets jets power valves, etc.

I know normally the intake tube on the spacer points up, but obviously the carburetor would not fits

The only way I could get this carburetor to attach was turning the spacer in this direction, which I know is not correct. You can see the red arrow. The mechanism has no movement at all as it hits the intake tube.

Trying to figure out what the option from here would be

Can you flip it upside down like this?

This spacer is from a '69 and the original imprints from the carb and intake manifold indicate it should be mounted with the bent tube facing upwards.

Might also be an early '69 to later '69 component compatibility issue. This spacer is from March production so early '69 perhaps your carb is a late '69.

No I think if you flip it it should work.

Here's the carburetor the spacer was mounted with and it has the same type of linkage that you are have interference issues with.

Would it matter what side of the carb the vent is on ?
The butterfly’s on the carb operate separately so the butterfly valve on the driver side opens and closes fully whereas the butterfly valve on the passenger side opens and closes slightly. They are not the same

So if the intake valve (what the intake hose is clamped on ) on every other 40 or 55 I’ve seen is on the passenger side. I’m not sure it would operate correctly if I were to switch it to the driver side if that makes sense.

I think I found it
Spector had some images and it looks like for roughly 6 months there was a spacer used without a vent

My carburetor is exactly designed for that spacer

I have two spacers so I think I am going to try to cut one of the vents and plug it and see if that works

Its your vehicle and you can do as you like but here's another image from the Specter catalog you might want to consider. Looks like the intake hose is on the driver's side to me....

i kinda dont understand when you say it doesnt fit.... why doesnt it fit? pics of the issue?

i think they just had it goto the manifold instead of the the spacer port for a time?

just dont understand whats preventing you from flipping it 180 and have the port up on the drivers side front?
