60 rear springs on a 40 shackle length question

Yeah, i'm wondering if I should start searching for a few more 60 springs

It honestly took me like 3 months to round up two sets of rear springs. I do live in the middle of the Rockies, but the local yard wanted $100 each side:eek: F that noise. Being in SoCal you should have no issues rounding up some springs. that place seems like landcruiser heaven.

funny, i always think there must be more cruisers in the rockies! guess the grass is always greener! Thanks again for your pictures, your front looks like it came out really nice!

Yeah, not too bad for a harbor freight grinder and a ready welder out in the condo parking lot. It's a lot more comfortable working on it now that the snow is gone! Post up some pictures of yours when you make some progress. Also feel free to PM me with any specific questions, I have spent a bunch of time researching my build and can refer you to some good threads if I can't answer myself.

Evan

right on, thanks

After comparing the height of the 60 and 40 springs I think I will try to use 40 springs flipped up front, this morning I set them side by side and they sit at the same height. I will post pics and info as it goes

Hi All:

"Ewheeler," looking good man!

I used 60 rears in the front as well. Used the same spring hangers from Ruffstuff except I flipped them around. SOA and shackle reversed. Saginaw swap as well with 4x4 labs high steer. I used the ruffstuff spring perches with the three different spring pin options. Wheel base is around 104-105 with axles all the way forward/rearward on the perches.

Pretty sweet!

E,

That is a sweet looking build! Can you show some pictures of your shackle mounts for the front springs. I like your spring hangers in the front, now just want to check out the rear mounts for the front springs.

Thanks,

Here are a few of the front shackle hanger:

What specifically do you want to see?

Hangers are offset like stock. I believe the width was 38.5"? I just measured the width of the spring perches on my old SOA rear axle and kept everything the same. I supported the front spring hangers with a couple gussets but I don't have any pictures yet. Let me know if you want any more specific pics.

I wanna see/ hear MORE on these pics...
Did you add that extended plate on the hanger? I dont recall having that with the kit that I got from Dan...
So you kept the rear spring hanger in the stock location, but the bracket move the whole shootin match BACK 2 in? If so, that is good news for me!
How thick of material did you use for the shackles?

Yes, extended plate was on the hanger. The hangers were too outboarded on the frame not to. I also gusseted the hangers.

Hanger is a bit back from stock, but not much. And yes, Dan's hangers are angled such that I gained a bit of wheelbase compared to just moving the stock hangers back.

Shackles are 2x3/8" bar stock. I bought like 6' so I will be able to make shackles for days.....and it was only like 20 bucks. Here are a bunch of pics.....

Cool, thanks for the pics!
That gives me a good reference to work from!

How long did you make those shackles?
and is there an optimum shackle angle?

Thanks,

Tom

He said it was 6 in eye to eye.
Everything Ive read as static ride height the shackle angle should be 45*. For mine, Ill probably go with 35 or 40 deg to allow for additional weight for trail packing. On my 62, Mine was at 45, and when i loaded her down, she sank quite a bit.
