5.3, versus 6.0, versus 5.7

The only way I could think of why you would get better mileage with the downstream O2s hooked up is if the ECM was going into a base mode when it couldn't see the cats working, but I've never even heard of that. You want something hooked up to the downstream sensors, but only to keep the light off. Simulators are the best option if you're not going to run cats.

Certainly, the aft O2 sensors could be used for some very finite fuel control and probably are in some engines, but I don't believe they are utilized this way in any of the engines being discussed in this thread. If you don't need cats to meet smog requirements, you can eliminate them and the associated O2 sensors. Catalytic converters add nothing to the operation of an engine.

Edit: You're in California, so you are stuck using every bit of emissions equipment installed on the donor vehicle. :frown:

If the second 02 sensor is only looking at emissions, why are guys getting better mileage running 4 02 sensors?

I have a 99 version of the 5.7 vortec, I don't have "cat" converters, nor do I run any of the emission equipment or sensors, I don't have rear 02 sensors and my PCM has been programmed for all of that. I don't have EGR active either. I'm running a toyota 5 speed, I don' t have to pass emissions testing.

If you have to pass emissions testing you have to understand what that means in regard to engine modifications. I suspect to pass CA emissions with a swapped engine...that means you will need all the emissions crap as the OEM donor vehicle had. If you want to max fuel milage I expect you will have all 4 02 sensors in operation along with all emissions crap that the PCM expect to "see". I would also presume you would need to run the matching transmission off the particular engine in question however it was configured OEM from GM.

I have pretty good power (no clue as to real HP numbers), my fuel milage is not much better than stock, but engine runs strong and I drive it mostly on the trail etc. I really don't care about fuel milage as long as its reasonable for a 4*4 brick with 4.88 gears and mid size tires.

If you have to pass emissions in CA you better stop and assess that number one....then find out what you can do in regard to engine mods. Bottom line...the electronically controlled engine...will run most efficiently with all the crap it came from the factory with.... minor exhaust mods might improve that a little bit.. if you are talking about something that is driven a few thousand miles a year...why chase fuel milage.

I think you will end up with a stock configurage to pass CA smog ref...but thats just what I think and I don't live in CA nor do I have first hand knowledge of the rules there.

A 5.3 isn't a real upgrade over a 5.7 vortec. a 5.7 actually feels more powerful because it doesn't need to rev so high for its power. A 6.0 however is a real upgrade. Hp is a function of torque and rpms. The 5.7 is more powerful until farther in the rpm range than most people operate on a daily basis.

I agree totally.

My FJ40 is a 67, so no emissions for me this time (did it all on my '84 FJ60). I found a 6.0 that I'm going to use, so my oldest and I will pry the NV4500 off the 5.7 tonight and list if for sale.

Good call. Go big or go home.

Or as I like to say - Go big, then go broke, then go home.

a 6.o GM SBC is pretty impressive...would be really cool to see one setup with the matching gm 6 speed auto.

I've had problems with every auto I've put in a swap. I'm going manual on this one. My boys will learn how to work a clutch in it.
