4 wheel parts 5.29 for 8.2"

just saw this. I am going to have to redo the seals on my rear and thinking about regearing while I am doing it.

The 2000 rpm at 60 mph in 6th gear is what peaks my interest.
4.88 is 71 mph

I am running 34s

I've found very limited reduction in MPG with 4.56 gears. Since I only have a 5-speed, pulling 80 mph is a whopping 2,700 rpm. The GX just buzzes along and gets maybe 0.5 mpg less than it did before. But it almost never downshifts. And, it's downright fun to drive the the added acceleration.

You guys are in a much better position with the 6th speed trans. After worrying that 4.56s were too much and then realizing they weren't, I'd have no qualms about 4.88 gears in a 460, or even the 5.29s if you are gonna run big tires.

I looked at self-performing. Buying the parts (gears + lockers) were the about the same cost as ordering a pre-built front diff and rear 3rd member from ECGS with a 5-year warranty. It would have actually cost me more to DIY it due to the need to buy the special tools (dial indicators etc), even though I already have a 20-ton press. It's actually one of the very few things on my rig I haven't DIY'd.

I have done it before on a 2 pinion 8".

Granted I had two seasoned offroad racers helping me.

I am kinda back to not trusting people to work on my car. Not great, but is what it is.

I would have DIY'd it if there had been a substantial cost savings. But, I don't plan to to gears regularly (if ever) again, so this was the rare instance of a DIY costing around the same and taking longer and not making sense for me. I also talked to one local diff shop but they refused to do it because it seemed to "complicated" (they initially thought a Lexus GX was a sports car...).

Gears only can be done for about $2K with ECGS, with lockers an extra $1,000 to $1,500 per axle. I splurged for Harrop elockers and have been happy with them.

I am seriously considering staying with opens or if I go 4.88 doing a front helical LSD.

I really wish there was a Detroit for the 8.2.

I haven't really run into a situation where I was grip limited that couldn't be fixed by picking a different line.

I considered helical LSDs but wasn't sure how they'd operate in the front of a AWD vehicle. Used my rear locker yesterday to make it up a very steep hill covered in very deep snow :). Solid wheel spin for 300 to 400 yards or so to keep moving. I would not have been able to make it up with ATRAC only. The front locker gave me more traction but I had zero steering. I definitely like the traction aids, BUT I've also ran a ton of trails without them and, like you, generally had plenty of traction.

Thats what the Hakkapeliittas are for.

Seriously, they break my brain. I lock the center diff and can just basically drive like normal.

Drove the 4runner last night to the pharmacy. We had 4" or so of snow and it didnt even get into the abs or traction control really.

For 5.29s and install kits its only about $1400. I can get a 20 ton press as I imagine i will be putting 4.56s in the 4runner.

I (myself) installed lunchbox lockers on our old '89 Toyota pickup in our garage. The rear was easy, the headache was the front IFS.

I was quoted 4k to fix John's 4x4 work on my rear axle by the dealer. Which was shocking considering they were 25% less than an independent shop for the headgaskets.

Thats what started me down this rabbit hole.

I have priced used axles on ebay as well. They are about 2k.

You can get a brand new rear axle housing from Toyota for around $1100, then swap all of your parts over to it (<1 day of work, would be easy for a shop with a lift). I put one in my GX470 - OEM trussed axle housing, shipped from Japan. Another forum member in CO was able to get the trussed housing from a dealer in CO.

Was this through Crawlorado?

They got it from a dealer. The actual dealer might be listed in the GX470 Gears/Axle/Upgrade thread.

Here is a stock replacement for a 460. They appear to have gone up in the past year by around $200. Any Lexus or Toyota dealer should be able to order it for you.

Here is what I bought. This is a JDM/AUDM rear housing for a FJ/Prado 150 that includes a OEM truss that ties the axle tubes to the center section. If you have KDSS you might not be able to use this, as it's for non-KDSS rigs (not sure if Toyota makes a trussed housing with KDSS mounts). I got mine from Megazip, but Partsouq appears to be cheaper now, even with US shipping/tariffs. Still it's within $200 of the non-trussed housing and must be at least a little bit stronger.
