4X4 Lab bumper build...

It will be a center mounted tire, don't like the look of one side or the other. I will incorporate a highlift mount perhaps. I am going to likely use 1-3/4 tube to make the mount to simulate that of the ARB tubing just smaller. Cirbo has a similar setup on the bumper/tire carrier he just completed.

Greg, obviously it's looking very nice! What did you use for the lip to close the gap?

I hit mine with the grinder off and on over the weekend, I am about ready to paint it. I need to hit it one last time to get the scale off and prep it. Got some Zero Rust on the way for the undercoat. I totally forgot to ask Jerry to weld in those sections of solid tube to fill the spindle holes...............

Greg, looks really good. I may add a rear bumper project to my list on the 40 later on.

Guys - as a reminder to everyone, I am happy to lend a hand with any projects folks are doing that they need some help on. I can also offer my garage for several hours to do a project to those that don't have one and can fit in a 82" opening :)

Brad

Man that looks great Greg, but what did you do with the 2 spindles that were back there.

Greg, do you think these spindles are going to be strong enough? :D

My friend those spindles, well......though I was thinking they would work perfect for my purpose, over time, and it didn't take long, they became weaker and weaker. By the time I was ready to mount them they were empty....

That's got to hands down the best looking bumper for the 80. Can't wait to see the swingout once you get it fabbed up.

Looks great... when are you putting the tow hitch in??

I'm hoping we might be able to get another group buy going around August if anyone else is interested

The receiver is in place, one would just have to slide in their 2" hitch of choice. The retaining pin is behind the plate and the chain mount points also serve as supports for the receiver tunnel. Its a very clean design such that if you don't plan on pulling anything, no impact on departure angle.

I'll be up for one in a group buy...

Guys let me know when you would like to do the next group buy and I will contact Luke and set everything up again. I have a few pointers to making changes to the order this time.

That looks great!! i'm trying to still keep the love for my IPOR rear bumper.......

I'm also not trying to take away anything from Luke, but seeing that kit in pieces, seems like someone with the tools and decent fab skills could come close to faking one of those. hmmmmmmm..... now i just need tools and skillz!!

Honestly I thought the same thing but to get it all "fitted" like luke has done to make for a simple kit and installation....good luck. You would spend more time and money in materials and labor than I think you would having someone who did all the research on angles, conflicting points, and such like luke has already done...I originally wanted to start from scratch but the deal was just to sweet to sacrifice some things.

Ditto what Greg said. Once you start fitting pieces, seeing the tight tolerances, etc it really is quite impressive.

That's exactly what bill Masten did. He had the steel bent at a local place here and we welded it all up. The only difference is that he did not chop the frame

I think what really surprised me was seeing the side wings. Basically a plate of steel, cut and then compound bends. The bends would be tuff to get the tight tolerances.

Hell, i am just wishing/thinking out loud. I have none of the tools nor skills to fab that up from scratch. I could however, cut the rear cross member out and weld a huge hunk of steel to it!! :)

It could certainly be done, using all of Luke's pieces and "knock off" his bumper. Obviously, you'd need a metal brake than can bend 1/4" steel. I won't elaborate into the ethics of doing such but it surely could be done. Maybe that's why no other vendors do such since buying one could yield many to those who would wish to create some "knock-offs"...

"knock-off"....???? um, that's not really a fair statement. If you use that logic anyone who built a metal rear bumper is knocking off slee, hannah, IPOR, Luke, ect... Same with sliders, roof racks, ect....

I'm not trying to knock it off, just have the pride of being a part of building your own stuff. Secondly, incorporate all the cool ideas that luke uses and perhaps adding other things from other bumpers.

I just looked at the side pieces and figured that those were cut and welded together when in fact they are not. The center section looks pretty obvious.

Again, i'm not taking anything away from Luke's abilities and creativity. It's the best on the market IMHO. I was just trying to think could i make one of those?

Either way, i think the bumper looks great!

I put mine together over Thanksgiving. Such a nice bumper when all is done. I'm working on the tire carrier this week to get it finished up...
