Not sure if this is the right section for this, but I'm thinking of buying a '77 SR5 (Hilux/Pickup/Tacoma?) 2WD truck, but it's a 2WD auto and I'm wanting to convert it to a 4WD with a standard tranny later and (maybe) a diesel. Could it be converted to at least a 4WD and roughly how difficult would it be??? Thanks everybody!

Also... Based on just that info and pic, is it worth $2k?

well first off it's definitely not a Tacoma. As far as fabrication goes you can pretty much do whatever you dream up. It would probably be easier to do a solid axle swap. The swap would be very similar to an IFS or later 2wd truck. The fabbed parts for the swap might need some tweeking.. I am not sure how the frame is set up on the earlier trucks.

as far tranny's, since that truck has an R series engine, you should be able to swap in a later transmission and transfercase. Also the motor mounts I imagine should be in the same location as a 22r equipped truck, you could easily swap in an L series toyota diesel. Hope that helps

That does help... I guess it's considered a Hilux or just Pickup? I kinda figured you could do pretty much whatever, but I wanted to see everybody's thoughts on if that's the long road to the end result. ;) I was thinking it would be cool to eventually do what you suggested and do a solid axle swap, diesel, standard tranny...etc.

That is an image of a variety of Corolla, as per:

The difference is that from what I've seen out in the wild all have a had utility body, whereas in your image it has a seperate pick up bed, of which I've never seen before.

Hmm... Never seen those before. There's been some interesting Toyotas out there for sure!
