In the garage.
I have an 86 4runner & a solid axle truck frame of unknown year, I want to put it together to make a solid axle 86 4runner, what do you think? swap body on to frame or eaiser to convert existing frame using parts from S/A frame?

IMO it would be easier to just do a SAS on the '86 frame. There's really no advantage to the earlier frame, the front spring hangers are pretty weak, and you'll have to then modify it for crossover steering (don't even think of keeping the factory push-pull steering). There's considerable fab work on the rear body mounts, you'd have to cut off the bed mounts and swap over the 4Runner mounts. Not to mention the work to move the body over. Not impossible, but if your '86 frame is otherwise in good condition, I would just keep it.

I agree it would probably be easier to SAS the '86, but if you are planning on doing some serious wheeling, the solid axle frame will allow a lot more up travel so you could keep the truck much lower with the same size tires.

Why the up travel advantage on the solid axle frame?

Never done a SAS, but been wheelin & wrenchin on minis & 4runners for many years & never heard that before.

The frame has more arch over the front axle.

This is true, but the frame is also not as strong/deep forward of the rear shackle hole. The IFS frame is stronger here. Compare this picture of a solid axle frame to your IFS frame:

Ok, I figured that was the answer/reason.

Haven't made a plan yet, but will prolly do the swap over to the IFS rig, looks like lots less work.

Thanks, all for the input
