I have a 89 4x4 pickup currently without an engine and trans, and i am wanting to swap in either a 3.3 or 3.9 cummins. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Heavy engine for a Toyota. If you are dead set on a diesel look into a VW TDI swap.

If you are set on a desiel swap. There are plenty of writeups on OM617 swaps, its a 5Cly mercedes turbo deisel engine, very reliable and decent power. Came in 300D and 300SD models.

I agree. If you want the cummins I say go for it, but the 4bt weighs in at over 1,000 lbs if I remember correctly. I know it has been done, but gonna need some heavy springs and the frame rails will need beefing up.

TDI motors are good but from what I've read tend to feel a little underpowered for this application.

I'd look at the Merc, seems to be decent power with less weight.

If you are especially brave, the new Audi SUV has a diesel option, 250 hp and 300+ lb-ft if I remember correctly, but crazy electronic controls to deal with.

If it is power you are after look at Toyminator's 4.0 Lexus V8 build. This is the route I am looking at when the time comes.

Yeah need more info on what your trying to achieve...

Thanks for all the input guys, i want it to be a dd/occasional wheeler but nothing hardcore just a few holes now and again. Any kind of numbers on the Merc diesel?

Ive always said that if i were to desiel swap, itd' be an OM617 merc turbo desiel. 135 HP and 181 Ft/Ibs torque @ 3200 RPMs. And if i am not mistaken it is comparible in weight to the 22R.

4x4labs makes an awsome adapter for the W-56 trannys. Check out their site if your still considering the OM617. And just an FYI these motors have been known to run up too 500K miles. IMO the most reliable engine Merc. has ever produced. It is their 22R-E :D

Your welcome, Wiring will be a hassle with any engine swap. But im pretty sure it dosnt have near as many sensors, connections, vacuum lines as the 22R does.

Diesels are usually built a bit heavier than gassers are and the 22re is a pretty light gasser to start.

As far as ease of install and reliability, you just can't beat am old mechanical diesel.

A 4bt is a bit extreme, but I contemplated a 3.3l Cummins before I happily settled with a Toyota 3Lt-i.

At a minimum, wiring would involve alternator, power to glow plugs (and a relay+switch, remove the controller), fuel cutoff, starter. Much easier than an EFI gas truck.

Gauges are either adapt Toyota to fit the motor or do aftermarket gauges.

I'm doing an OM617 into an '85. Still waiting on the machine shop to reassemble the motor. It came out of a '89 or '90 pickup conversion with 37s and the PO managed to break the rear axle with that motor before deciding to get bigger tires and a v8.

Does anyone know the exact weight of an OM617? Im intrested now..
just looking around on the internet people are saying almost 600 pounds , dont know if thats correct or not
