Not to step on anyone's toes here, but IMO the CE has absolutely no significance. Who is the collector? The average US buyer? The CE has no attributes that would make it desirable. The only "unique" part of the CE is the door molding which I would speculate to be a carry-over from the 40th and not intended to be CE specific. And who still has the cheesy jacket and bag?
The 40th is also only a "skin deep" model. However, there is the unquestionable fact that it is the "official" serial numbered model by Toyota. The 40th is also not only a Toyota USA model, Toyota also had an official 40th edition land cruiser in 1994 for the rest of the world. Yes there is no real documentation on the 40th model run or the actual numbers and the color, door moldings, two tone seats, auto a/c really does not make it desirable. However to me it is the SIGNIFICANCE of what the 40th stands for and that these models are labeled by Toyota to pay tribute to that fact.
So would I care if you showed up in a 40th over a two tone, chrome package, or CE? Nope, but I bought a 40th and would not have bought any other model. I'd also add that mine is emearl pearl which I'm 90% sure was produced in much less numbers as those in sage.
