Question for the thunderclappers (in the next post)...
I’ve got a customer’s ‘81 40 in the carport. Another shop diagnosed it as having a burnt exhaust valve in #6. I checked the compression & #1-5 were 160-180, but #6 had ZERO.
Pulled the valve cover, to find this:
(I suspect) The valves were so far out of adjustment that the pushrod had enough room to jump out of its hole at an angle and get smashed by the rocker arm. Some had 1/4” or more of clearance.
I was already meeting Nolen to pickup a desmogged City Racer carb & recurved dizzy to install, so he brought the head, pushrods, and rocker assembly from the ‘84 2F he just pulled out of Blue.
I swapped his pushrods & rocker assembly over, and turned it by hand to make sure nothing was bound up.
Everything looked good, so I checked the compression. (this is cold & dry and only about 10 psi from the tightest cylinder. I expect 170 out of it hot)
Fired it up and it runs pretty good. Set the timing and went for a test drive and to warm it up. Came back and pulled the valve cover to do a final valve clearance, and watched it run topless. There is ZERO oil coming out, anywhere.
