Question for the thunderclappers (in the next post)...

I’ve got a customer’s ‘81 40 in the carport. Another shop diagnosed it as having a burnt exhaust valve in #6. I checked the compression & #1-5 were 160-180, but #6 had ZERO.

Pulled the valve cover, to find this:

(I suspect) The valves were so far out of adjustment that the pushrod had enough room to jump out of its hole at an angle and get smashed by the rocker arm. Some had 1/4” or more of clearance.

I was already meeting Nolen to pickup a desmogged City Racer carb & recurved dizzy to install, so he brought the head, pushrods, and rocker assembly from the ‘84 2F he just pulled out of Blue.

I swapped his pushrods & rocker assembly over, and turned it by hand to make sure nothing was bound up.

Everything looked good, so I checked the compression. (this is cold & dry and only about 10 psi from the tightest cylinder. I expect 170 out of it hot)

Fired it up and it runs pretty good. Set the timing and went for a test drive and to warm it up. Came back and pulled the valve cover to do a final valve clearance, and watched it run topless. There is ZERO oil coming out, anywhere.

Here’s a video:

So my question... what would cause no oil flow in the head?

I’ve heard if you use an earlier head gasket, or you put it in backwards it can block the hole.

My CSI skills tells me this head has been rebuilt, and put back together by a non-cruiser mechanic, so a head gasket eff-up is entirely possible.

I peaked down the oil return hole (or at least that’s what I think it is), and I can see gasket partially blocking it. I would assume there should be a full circular hole there.

Anything else to check?

Checking with the tape measure on Nolen’s old head, the measurements add up that this cut out is flipped, partially blocking the return hole.

Also, there should be some extra gasket hanging off the back. I can’t feel any in the truck.

So, I guess I’m 75% sure the head gasket is on backwards.

Pretty sure I see how oil is delivered to the rockers. What supplies it from the block? Does it pass through this oblong hole in the gasket? (you can see the oiling hole down in there)

If it were flipped it would have to try and pass through this hole, which is occupied by a head bolt.

Found a pic. Oil comes up through that oblong hole in the gasket, which is most certainly flipped in my case.

Somebody tell me I’m wrong before I pull the head...

Thanks, I got lucky that Blue had these parts to donate. The rest was just old fashioned detective work and chasing hunches.

In the meantime, if you have a 2F, let this be a lesson to keep your valves properly adjusted. And don’t let any old hack work on your sh!t....

I need to locate either a complete mini truck steering box, or the sector shaft out of one. Willing to send $ immediately...

Doesn't matter if the box is blown or now good, and long as the sector shaft can be salvaged.

Thx

Dammit that doesn't sound good.

Nothing is ever easy.

Need another box or have to replace th shaft in that one. Or combine two boxes to make good one.

Guess I’m gonna start calling junk yards. Pre 84 mini truck or 4R is what I’m looking for right?
