Hey guys

I just got my hands on a 4speed tranny and transfer case from an fj60 and want to know what I need to do to get this in my truck. I plan on tearing into it first to see what I need to do and if it is any good. I got it for next to nothing. Let me know what I need to do. Thanks

Carmon

IIRC, you will need the cross member or to fab your own. Also, I don't think you can use it w/the early one piece T-case PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG...

Carmon, you have a few options here:

1. source a split transfer case and you can bolt it all up without tearing into the tranny
2. source an output shaft from a 4 speed prior to '1980 when the split case came out and swap that into the tranny. That's a big job but it can be done, I've done it on the '55 TWICE! Once to get the H42 from a BJ60 to fit and second to get the H41 in there.

You will also require the 4 speed bellhousing. If you can find a pre-1980 one then you should be able to use the existing mounts if not you'll need to create a mount as I have done on my '55.

If you choose option #2 then you can use the existing transfer case that is attached to the three speed or 4 speed with the appropriate parts and gears. If you do a search you'll find out what exactly is needed. You will need to source the rear cover from the pre-1980 44 speed as well because the split case transfer also acts as the tranny rear cover.

Check out my thread on my '55 and the one on my '45LV and you'll see some of the tranny pics there which might clear things up for you.

Thanks Charles/Lamb,

One more quick question before I get back to work. This split transfer case, where would I source that? Are you saying pre 1980 4 speeds used this? Sorry just want to be clear that I understand what you are saying. I will look into those build threads when I get a little more time. Thanks again

Carmon

Split transfer case is a post 1980 thing. The '60 series tranny will have a 19 spline output shaft. The earlier 4 speeds had 16 spline output shafts. That's your problem and the above are possible solutions.

Just went back and read your first post. You said up there that you got the transmission AND the transfer case???

Carmon, I misread the first post. It sounds like you have the necessary transfer case. You will need a place for the e-brake either a transfer case brake drum or a late model '40 series rear axle (post 1980).

Yep, both tranny and transfer case. As soon as I get it over to my place I will take some pics to see what you guys can tell me. The guy who gave it to me said it was running fine before he flipped it. Engine is fine so i assume the transfer case and tranny should be too. Should I rebuild this and if not what should i check out before putting it in my truck.

One more Question:

If I have the transfer case then thats settled. What do I need to do on the bellhousing? I need a post 80 4 speed bellhousing? Are there any other options? Thanks guys.

What transmission did you have in that rig? I think that the trans will bolt up to either the early or later four speed housing????? Difference is the later housing does not have rear mounts, so you will have to fab something ala Cruiser_guy. He seems to have your situation figured out already. The e brake will be your next hurdle.....Keep us all posted, been thinking about this myself. The 60 stuff seems to be easier to get.:meh:

Carmon, If you catch up with me this weekend, I've got 4 speed bellhousings.
Plus driveshaft mods, both in length and flange pattern.

Try for the pre-'80 4 speed bellhousing to get the rear mounts. If you do that, simply ignore the mounts on the bottom of the tranny.

If Paul cannot help you, and I'd be surprised if he can't, then you'll need to fab up a tranny belly mount like the '60 series and my '55.
