I have a '91 4 runner with a v6 and R150F transmission.
The transmission pops out of first gear and the shift bushing is new. I am planning on replacing the tranny and i am wondering what the difference is between the '89,'90,'91 R150F and the rest of the second gen R150F's. The yards around here tell me that they are not interchangable and the early R150F's are hard to find (one I found local with 15000 miles was priced at just under$1000!!!)

Will any R150F from any '89-'95 4 Runner or mini truck work or will I need to get one from of the early models?

If it were me, I'd call Marlin and see what they say about the tranny you have now. It may be an easy fix.

It's not hard to rebuild these trannys, a press and bearing splitter is pretty much required though.

I am not too afraid of rebuilding the transmission, I have rebuilt several others but that was 25 years ago (back when i used to try and go FAST instead of slow!). I am pretty sure this one will need a new first gear, and there is no sense in going into one without replacing the bearings, syncros.... I just figured I could find a spare and swap it for about the same money and take my time doing a rebuild on this one.
The kicker is that I just found out a friend has a spare (unknown year) that I can have for free, now I just want to make sure it will work before I drive a couple hours to pick it up.

Well, again I think Marlin is your best and most reliable resource for answering that question. I didn't know there were differences in the R150's, if this is indeed true.

I agree, I guess I will give them a call on Monday, I know they are busy and thought I would try try here before taking their time.
