I have a 1990 4 runner, recently it will shoot the idle up to 2500-4000 rpm when I start it. The idle will eventually go down, but it still worries me that it is doing this in the first place. I was wondering if anyone knows what might be causing this to happen. Thanks for your time.

Take off the air intake tube that runs up from the airbox, spray some type of lubricant on the throttle plate pivot. WD-40 won't last very long, I usually use a Teflon-based lube like Tri-Flow.

Check the throttle cable linkage for binding too.
