do not install the oil cooler but if you have the oil one get the nipple out of the housing the filter screws onto and save it it will screw into the block after you take of all the lines. bit of info took me a week looking for the part at the dealer.

Intake maybe

BTW, in my experience, this happened much more on the Vortec motors than the TBI versions, but it could have also been a slew of bad Colorado trucks for all I know. I'm not knocking the 4.3, I actually think that it's a great engine, but if I put one in my truck, the first thing I'd do before it went in would be intake manifold/head gaskets. So easy when they aren't in the truck!

Have done that, but the motor sat for a year before I put it in. I have had the same Toyota since 87, about 6 head gaskets and 4 heads, two differnt blocks. So say what you want about Toyota reliabilty. (bad motor doubt it) Had a reputible shop build the last one. It lasted about a year and the head gasket went. Yes the block was decked. Bad luck, maybe I will never have a 22RE in anything I own.

Wow, that is really weird :l

My 86 22R went 300k miles with no issues..

Well I can see why you'd have a sour taste in your mouth, I'd feel the same way if I'd been through all that. I was just giving you a little of my experience to help you out ;). When I get the 22re for my 4runner I am going to make for damn sure it has an OEM or better HG in it. I've probably owned about 5 22r/e engines in my time and have only had one bad HG with any of em.
