I have a 92 land cruiser with the 4.0 I6 engine in it... i've done all the suspension work that i want and have 36" wheel/tire combo. What I really want to do now is put some performance back into that engine with headers/exhaust/CAI/ chip and maybe a performance ignition. Finding these parts though is proving to be extreamly hard... does anyone know where to get these parts?????

any help is greatly appreciated and I am thankful I found these forums

And Welcome to the 80 section. Someone will be with you shortly.

-Spike (Sorry, I don't have your engine, but I'm sure someone in here has some info for you. Meanwhile, feel free to do a search. :D Use '3FE' as a parameter.)

Have you re-geared your truck after you went with the 36" tires? I can't imagine driving a 3FE with 36's and stock gearing... slow... slow.... slow.

Headers are a waste, stock manifold flows VERY well. 2.5 back or dual 2" with a decent muffler will do a lot. A good tune-up with all oem parts (plugs, wires, rotor, cap, fuel filter, air filter, O2 sensors if you have the dough) will do a good bit too. Then you could desmog it (it wont pass visual though) for a little more pep. Advance the base timing and run higher octane gas for even more advance. Open up the MAF sensor and loosen the gear ONE TOOTH, anymore than that and your mileage will go down.

Other than that there is no bolt on performance parts, you can get cams and other hotrod stuff, but if you do all this you'll be happier than before.

Just reitterating what I said in the other thread.

Thanks for the help i'm new to land cruisers and toyotas in general... but i found this one for such a great deal. I realized after I posted this thread that I posted it in the wrong area so I then posted the second thread. So from what i've learned there aren't that many parts for this engine... which isn't all bad just means i'll have to throw one of the chevy engines that is sitting in my garage into it one day when the motor goes. Who sells kits for that????? Also no it isn't geared and yes it is slow but gears are the next thing to go in followed by lockers.

No I let go of my camaro (being 6'7 i'm tired of being cramped) and bought this... I still have my 00 grand prix for the daily driving... but I also don't want to sacrifice driveability in the cruiser too much for long trips... cam is something i'd think about but seeing as though i'm not sure if i'm going to build up this motor (when it goes ) or throw in a sbc i'll keep away from that option for the time being... i'll follow your advice with the other stuff for now. just two more questions who makes a good exhaust kit for it and what gears should i get for the 36's

There really are no good kits for the 91/92, and the 93+ kits are sketchy. Best bet is to let an exhaust shop do a 2.5" cat back system for you with a good flowing muffler, at most you will spend $450 on that.

For gears, it's a toss up between 4.88 and 5.29. 4.88 puts you back at stock ratio, but 5.29s will add some more pep at the loss of 80+mph highway speeds (more like a confortable 65-70mph). Since it isn't a daily driver, and you seem to want more power through the seat of your pants, I'd go with the 5.29's.

thanks again.... the truck has 204k on it but has a rebuilt head..... what problems might arise in this truck.... i'm not looking for it to last forever but are there any problem area's for this year cruiser??? on a different forum some thought I should buy a used 4.5 because it is much more reliable  also why do some people want a 2f block?? what are the advantages of that??

4.5 is NOT more reliable, more to go wrong with it. 2F block can be swapped under a 3FE head to give longer stroke and more torque, it is still better to just build the 3FE.

Problems are small, EFI relay and EFI relay wire (needs to be replaced with larger wire) and the fuel pressure regulator. Other than that there really is no pattern for breakdowns. These are solid running tractor motors that are normally good for about 300k before an overhaul.

where is a good place to buy gears... and is the axels in the truck the toyota 8" ??? Here are some pics that the previous owner took
