I smell Mons Venus!
Hi all,

As always, thanks in advance.

I have a 93 4Runner 4x4,auto, 3.0 in the final process of getting a used engine from a 91 3VZE 2WD 5-speed (truck, I think), and it turns out the water pump's bad.

1) How bad a job to replace it in the 3.slow, and will enough of the engine be cracked open to make doing more preventative maintenance a no-brainer? To quote Click and Clack, how many bananas is this job?

2) Could this have been diagnosed while the engine was still outside the vehicle somehow, or something you should always replace when doing the swap anyways?

3) Finding the correct pump has been educational as well, as there are two different pumps available for this motor, and nobody can tell me much beyond that the fact that the housings are different.

Thanks again.

1. 2-3 bannana job, if you know what you're doing you could probably crank it out in 4-6 hours...

Yeah, you have to take the timing belt off, so belt and tensioners should be replaced if suspect...

2. hard to tell unless it's leaking, or shows signs of leaking...

3. Buy one of each and return the one you don't need. :D

Thanks, man.

I took a page from my dear departed brother's book, and just threw money at the problem until it went away.

An additional $60 on top of the $350 for the swap and A/C repair. Gotta love the modest central Florida labor costs!
