So my runner has almost 270,000 miles on it and she just sprung another leak the other day. Im just going to keep putting oil in it for the time being. The motor runs great, it just leaks alot more oil than I care to put in it. So im thinking 22RE swap? How difficult might this be and could a couple of guys with general mechanical knowlege do this? Ill be finished with timing belts and the fuel mileage should be slightly better. I can probably make more power with a 22RE also. What do yall suggest?

Thanks,

Andy

best thing to do, IMO. Pull the engine, and do all the gaskets.

I would pull it, but you can do whatever you want. I don't like working in confined spaces, and BTT you pull the upper intake, IMO you could be halfway done pulling the motor. I also H8 dropping an IFS diff. IDK why, I just do.

I'm gonna try and say this w/o making it a a 12 page essay.

The 3.0h is a good motor. It is better than it's reputed to be. Nothing last forever...NOT EVEN A 22RE...(commence, FIRE!) If you PULL this motor, you can do lots of things to ensure its LONG TERM SURVIVAL. You can pull the heads and have them done. You could pull the pistons and glaze break the cylinder walls....lots of things. And I'll go out on a limb here, (since IH8 sob stories of oil leaks that make people want to do stupid s*** like this :bang:) and say, you prolly don't even need all that stuff. Just fix what's broke.

It's lasted you almost 300k? Re-ring it and drop some headers in and be done with it?

Stay tuned for more "power" posts....VVV

Where did it spring this leak?

From the everything but an electrical standpoint, I believe all you'd have to do is acquire a RTE bellhousing, and weld you some new motor mounts. The rest, I don't know jack about electrical, so I aint saying. But knowing Toyota, they prolly jacked the wiring harness up bad.

And you might get more HP (with lots of money). But, you will NOT get more torque.

the RTE bellhousing is all you would need to keep the V6's tranny. but chances of find that is about as likely as me pulling my head out of my ass.

so your best off findin a 4cyl trans. Any 4x4 4cyl trans will bolt up to any 4cyl. talkin about the 22RE :flipoff2: early stuff is shorter, so keep that in mind.

I'd get one off a 2WD. There's plenty in my parts....

If you can afford the 3.4 swap... do that. if not just rebuild the 3.slow (this from an avid 22re guy)

This is my vote too.

Convert to the 22RE will probably cost almost as much, and you'll be disappointed in the power. Besides the engine mounts & tranny issues, you'll need EVERYTHING, ie: wiring, ECU, airbox, etc etc etc. Not that the 3.4 swap is easier, but if you're gonna go thru all that expense and trouble, make it a good engine candidate. The 3.4 is a better engine in the long run, easier to work on, more power.

I have a predicament close to this....

I want to 22RE (Damn the POWA!!) and 5speed my 94 V6, AT 4Runner. They are that hard to find, and I am thinking that hard-up for one....

I've got the runner, it's just been in two hit and runs. If you do it, ToyotaGuy88....pics please:D
