I am replacing the ujoints on my 1972 3spd fj40 and I noticed some issues with the slip yoke:
1. The felt seal on the slip yoke cover was ripped in half and barely hanging on. Looks like these felt seals are no longer available.
2.The "welch plug" that covers the interior of the slip yoke is missing. Looks like a 36mm freeze plug will work here?

Has anyone sourced an alternate replacement for the felt seals? If not has anyone fitted a rubber boot style slip yoke cover? Looks like Crown Automotive 5012793AA may work? Im not super concerned with originality, just something functional.

Following up for someone who may have this problem in the future, I found that a Dorman 555-093 expansion plug (freeze plug) can be fitted to the slip yoke as a welch plug. It wasn't a perfect fit (35.2mm plug in a 36mm hole), but I got it locally at Oreilys for 70 cents. The expansion plug is slightly tapered and domed, so if you insert into the yoke and flatten out flush with a shop press (or BFH) it fits well. I added a dab of JB weld around the perimeter prior to flattening so it wont be popping out anytime soon.

I ordered the Crown 5012793AA driveline boots and will report back on fittment in a couple days.

Hi all,

The thing you call a "welch plug" is a dust cover.

I have removed these to allow more compression of the drive shaft slip joint. To cover the slip joint I used a Rancho brand shock boot I had on the shelf.

Thanks for the Crown and Dorman part numbers.

Regards,

Alan
