Hello Mudders,
I am driving an FJ80 with a 3FE and was surprised to find that my transfer case is very hot after normal highway driving. When touching it, I must remove my fingers immediately—1 or 2 seconds max.
According to Gemini, it's around 60–70°C (140–160°F).
Is that high or normal?
comments from 3FE owners(and others) is highly appriciated
thx

Engine heat flows through the transmission tunnel of an 80 Series when driving. That's why the center console can get hot if the floor is not insulated.
If you have 90 weight gear oil in the transfer case at the correct level, move on to more important things.

thx Jon. i have 75-90 in the case. any idea for the actual normal temp range?
