Well as the title says I am planning a 3fe swap into my 86 fj60. My 2f is worn out, burning oil, slight knock, it served me well but I find myself more worried when I'm driving it and that's never good. So as much as I loved that noisy, smelly old carbureted machine, it's time for a transplant and I stumbled upon a great donor. The donor truck is a wrecked 88 fj62 (3fe), I wasn't exactly ever planning to go fuel injected but with 79k on this motor and after getting a good deal on the whole truck I can't pass this up.

So after reading countless conversion threads, and I thank you mudders for that, I am considering the 2fe option. So I am looking for opinions on what my next step should be. Keep in mind I am a cruiser mechanic, I work in a big shop where space and tools are no problem plus a very understanding boss. I am thinking I want to swap in the 3fe.....oh yeah I'm doing a h55f swap too.....but anyways I am going to swap the entire 3fe in and get everything up and running with the 5 speed and work out any issues that may come up as well as figuring out the fuel system (external, internal, factory w/tank). and then while i'm enjoying driving my 3fe I will have the 2f short block rebuilt. Then down the road....probably after my summer fishing dies off...I will begin the 2fe conversion which I'm thinking will be much easier now that the electronics and fuel system are figured out already. Does anybody have input on this plan? am i missing anything? or would you guys who have done it prefer to just do the 2fe build first? I'm looking for less down time but I'm posting this to get other opinions. Either way I'm excited for the newer engine that will hopefully serve me well for a long time.

If your donor 3FE is good, then I'd run it till it pops before mating the 2F short block. It's less stress to store a core block than to rebuild it and worry that it's corroding or gumming up. Cheaper too and you may decide to go with a V8 or diesel in 10 years. No need to spend cash on something you MIGHT want later.

You might really like the extra revs of the 3FE. 12% more rpm = 12% more horsepower. Mated with the H55 it's a very versatile combination for both city DD and off road.

Just saying, wait to spend money and doing work until you have to.

Dilemmas...

I'd stick the low miles 3FE in and run it. Doing this swap 2x with a rebuild in-between sounds like a lot of time and energy for relatively little gain.
