I have a 1991 Land Cruiser with the 3F-E I6. It has a pretty decent lifter tick. I have already adjusted the valve lash and all the lifter are spot on. This did not change the sound at all. If I put new lifter in will this fix the sound? Or is the sound caused by the block being long and tweeking slightly over many years and heat cycles and kind of pinching the lifters? I have also tried "Valvemedic" by Gunk brand which is spacificly made for lifters ticking. This did not help either. Any advice would be nice. Thanks

I adjust my valves while the engine is running. This helps me hear and feel how it needs to be adjusted. Sometimes as close as an 1/8 of a turn will make a valve tick. It's really not hard at all and don't worry the oil doesn't spray all over the place like a chevy does.

Thats funny. Mine is clicking like a diesel and I wasnt sure if it was normal. I have just been to busy with other stuff to worry about it yet. Although, my tick was completely gone when I had no radiator. :p

I've been lurking in the 60 series lately since they have a lot of info on the 3FE. I thought the 3FE wouldn't stay running with the valve cover off, and the only way to do it was quickly after you get it warmed up?

I also recall a thread were someone mentioned that some dohicky gets so worn out that even when its properly adjusted, it will still make noise. Sorry, can't remember what its actually called, but I believe it was fixable

I am very interested in what dohicky. I will do some searching when I get back from the boat race. I figured I was going to make a nice weekend wrench-a-thon when I replace my oilpan gasket. Its starting to get worse in the front and motivating me to fix it.

In order to keep the engine running, you need to plug or cap off two vacuum lines coming from the valve cover. The front one goes to the intake breather hose connector and the back one is the PCV valve.

I'm pretty sure they just sound like a sewing machine naturally. My parents '91 sounded like that from the day they got it with 30,000 miles to the day they sold it with over 300,000. My '92 is now in the 200,000+ range and also sounds like a sewing machine. I think thats just how it is and, unless its really out of adjustment, the valve job won't change it much.

My experience is from building F & 2F motors, have never done a 3F. With high miles they are known to have the lifters wear/mushroom, the wear is transferred to the cam, so a cam and lifter set is needed for proper repair. Wear on the rocker arm(s) and/or shaft can also cause a tick.

I have never seen this type of issue.

This type of snake oils are for hydraulic lifters, they have a small piston/valve in them for auto adjustment that can get clogged. The F motors are solid lifter, so it wont help.

You sure its a valve and not an injector?

X2, injectors can become noisy with age, most times wont affect performance. The best bet is to get a simple mechanics stethoscope and locate the source of the noise.
