Hey guys,

I was going to post this is the diesel section but I thought posting it locally would be more beneficial. I went to Toyota today to grab a few parts for my BJ42; an oil filter being one of those parts. Looks like the oil filter for the 3B diesel has changed (most of you probably know this). It use to be 15600-41010 but is now 90915-YZZD3.

My question is; are any of you guys still able to find the old large filters? They did have one left on the shelf (downtown location) - been sitting there since 2005 :P. I of course bought it.

The old filters are quite a bit larger...

I use the filters that Steve sells. They might be the same size as the Toyota OEM ones that are discontinued.

I ordered the 15600-41010 from the US and got the 90915-YZZD3 (3B/13BT).
The new filter is much smaller, but the 'O' ring and center hole thread are the same as the bigger one. The new filter cost $3.89 USD each, about half the older one and nearly 1/5 the US cost of an HDJ81 oil filter.
I change my filter every 5,000 km so I smaller filter must be adequate.

Yeah I ordered a bunch of filters with my last toyota parts batch. Specifically said I wanted the 'good' filters for my 3B. Disappointed when I got the little YZZD3. Not going to use them on my 3B, might on my 2F, maybe.

I run the PH8A or equivalent number depending on the manufacturer, whatever I normally get from Fortins; About 4 to 5 dollars a piece depending upon what's on sale. Buy several at a time.

I don't think size has any impact on filter effectiveness as many of the new car oil filters are quite surprizinly small too. Maybe the bigger older spec filter is for longer service - like two oil changes per filter, which I never have done.

I think it's simple economics. Smaller filter is cheaper to make, thus squeezing additional pennies out of the build cost of an automobile.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Knowing that the old large filters are discontinued, I almost don't want to use the one I got now haha. I guess I'll just end up changing the oil a bit sooner than normal if I use the D3 filters.

I'm going to see which filters he uses.

I still use the factory oil filter for my 1HD-T. It's a twin cartridge design, and I am not sure that the aftermarket ones for the 1HD-T are...or are not. I've not kept up on my on line presence enough to know if anyone has cut apart a few aftermarket to see.
