I've searched threads, but didn't find any write-ups that saw this through to the end. I have the BJ60 and am looking for a 1st gen runner currently.(was going to do a 40, but changed my mind)

Couple inquiries as I am new to this forum. Are all runners 4wd? Was interested in going a diesel 2wd baja route.

Only 1st gen with removable top?

Anyone local in Texas to help?

Really hoping for a clean runner with no drivetrain. This will be a DD so emphasis is on clean over price(kind of)

You could prolly do a Merc OM617 cheaper... And have more drive-ability, seeings how it's got a broader torque curve.

EDIT: Adapt the OM to an A340, and then get a RSS controler from RADesigns and fab up some flappy paddles. That should take care of your tranny valving and you get a nice fat 500rpm drop in OD.

Should also have better parts availability...

Some of the last 2nd gens were 2wd and you should prolly be able to pick one up cheap as most the ones I've seen are V6.

Yes the 1st gen has the removable top, sorry, no 2WD.

Whoops, hold on...

All you gotta do is pull the front diff and shafts... All the Pre-Runners I know of are built on the exact frame a 4WD is.

A 3B AND an H55 in a 2WD 4Runner? You going into the house moving business?

IMO, that's WAY too much overkill for a DD.

3B torque comes on at 2,000rpm... You won't let off the clutch and that thing be in the red for the next shift...

And the H55 doesn't have the best OD gear in the world...

W/o a Turbo it will be slow, and with that motor and tranny combo it will be ridiculously overweight.

...and 2WD.

My friend sold this, and that's me in it, said it would only do 65 and had no power.
But in it's defense it did have 4:11's in it...

3B, H55? 5 speed?

My other friend sold this... 3B-T H55 and it did have power:D

the plan

The plan is to turbo it eventually. I have the BJ60 so I have all the parts and it is the cheapest solution.(Unless someone wants to buy the drivetrain so I can configure it differently:D)

The BJ60 non turbo was my daily driver for awhile and easily hit 75 on the highways of Texas. I suppose for any mountain driving or elevation gain a turbo is a necessity. The runner will be lighter than the 60 by a lot! Really I am looking for a veggie burning pre runner with a removable top for the summer. Guess nobody has a 3B conversion or swapped 60 axles then.

It can be done, can't say anyone has, but the 3b's a relatively small form-factor, so I don't see why not. And the 4R would weigh a ton less than a 60, so you may get some good mileage, too.
Honestly, in your position, if I were to do this, I would likely just keep it 4X4, and swap in the 60 drivetrain complete, it takes a lot less than it seems to find yourself stuck with a 2WD vehicle.

Why?

IMO, that's WAY too much overkill for a DD.

3B torque comes on at 2,000rpm... You won't let off the clutch and that thing be in the red for the next shift...

And the H55 doesn't have the best OD gear in the world...

Why the early redline? I drove this combo in the 60 for a year without getting close to red. Is there something about a runner third member that would cause this? Are 4:11s available for runners?(I am a newbie to the runner thing)

OH ya, and I tend to be king of overkill....

Well, weight for one thing...

Less to heft is gonna transition to motion quicker...

So, it'll get to speed quick, but the engine has a 2-3,000 rpm red-line...

And to answer that, you need gears... Extremely HIGH gears...

If you go 2WD, I don't know for sure but you can prolly get a 3:50-ish gear
out of a Pre-Runner or 2WD V6 truck...

And, how you gonna get the H55 to dump the shaft out in the center?

Such a HD drivetrain for such a relatively light truck... I don't see it...

And I think you're gonna need some HD Torsion bars...

It can be done,

You can put a 4BT in a truck too...

With the drivability of a 600? 800lb? 4BT, and the heavy DT you'd have to use just so it'll stay alive...

I don't have a clue why somebody would do this.

I don't see any function in the truck below other than curb appeal.

that video makes me love stupid people...

Wasn't there a guy with an Orange truck that was swapping in a 3B?

Could have even swore "orange" was in the title...

I swear, it was a flatbed or something... It was a 84-88 BS...

I wonder if it went off to Diesel tech?

Since you don't have a 4runner , why not look for a decent fj40 thiat needs michanical work and swap the 3b and into it.
I did it last winter and aside from welding it very easy and you will not need anything else. You can use the 3.7 differentials from the 60 if you need to.

kinda sad... There are several threads started on the subject, several have fallen off into nothing, and apparently a handful ppl have completed the swap...

Follow Through

When I searched the threads that I found all dead ended with no complete product. Only the one with the hood modification was complete. Perhaps this is a pipe dream. Really don't want a 40, but I know that would be the easiest route. Really want something unique and practical and 100% mechanical.

Frame widths

Because I don't have a runner in front of me at the moment, does anyone know the frame width of the runner at the front axle?
